What's new

New coffee roaster onboard.

I just ordered ten pounds of green coffee beans from Sweet Maria's and I have a poppery II on the way here. I am looking forward to a new adventure. Since I've had fresh roasted coffee I cannot except buying coffee not knowing when it was roasted. Thanks to some of you I am willing to put the effort into roasting my own coffee. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.:wink2:

Congratulations!
Prepare to be frustrated beyond belief and astonishingly delighted..... sometimes at the same time.:tongue_sm

Congrats and welcome to the club! It's a fantastic journey. Did you hand-pick the beans, or go for a sampler pack?

I am interested in how your Poppery experience goes. Like you I recently bought some green beans and a hot air popcorn roaster but after looking into it more closely I became convinced the popcorn roaster was going to be too time consuming before I even started, as the batches are fairly small, so I have been looking for an alternative plan. Not sure whether it will be a grill rotisserie or special purpose machine. The cost of some of these machines makes wetshaving gear look like peanuts. For some interesting home made setups see: Hot Rod Home Coffee Roasters

This popper will, unfortunately, not really deliver the goods. Its only 1200 watts which doesnt have the power to roast well.

you need to find a Poppery 1 (1500 watts) or a Popcorn pumper (1400 watts) with these poppers 'split wired' (to turn the heat element off an on) you can amost control your roast profile.

I have used mine for about 5 years now, and its still going strong.

So I won't be able to roast coffee with the 1200 watt unit?

You will be able to roast, but you'll probably find that you're not putting enough heat in quickly enough to get the profile you might want. It shouldn't be a problem starting out, but with some experience you'll probably find yourself limited somewhat.

The Poppery II will work just fine for roasting coffee for the first time.

By the time you notice its flaws, you'll be more interested in roasting bigger batches, which will take you in another direction entirely. (away from air-poppers)
