New brushes

Hey all,

I have been working on trying new turning techniques on a few brushes. I wanted to see what the opinions are on these. Let me know what you all think. I appreciate all the input I can get. Thanks all.

Jeff

Both of them look awesome! Personally I prefer both the shape and color of the left one (the reddish, more tapered brush). Right one is a bit geometric (reminds me of an hourglass) and bulky-looking.

But of course, YMMV. I like the uneven taper and softer curves of the left brush, though.

The brush handles look very nice. My personal preference is for brush handles that are like the left side brush, longish and sleeker.

They do look great but I am of the other opinion as far as handles go..... I prefer the "Chubby-style" of handle so the brush on the right appeals more to me (either with or without the turned rings).
Thanks for sharing - good luck!

I actually like the look of the handle on the left side. However, functionally, I prefer the handle on the right side, because the top portion of the handle is angled, rather than being round. I tend to hold the brush towards the top, and the rounded part there can become slippery with lather.

Here is a chubby or two. I have tried carving a true chubby, and then created a taller thinner (but not too thin) handle, both out of black walnut.

That's beautiful work, Jeff. I'd be hard-pressed to pick just one as a favorite. But my top two would be the ones that seem to be opposites -- that tall, thin, curvaceous model at the top left, and the chubby at bottom right. I'd admire the first, because it's just drop-dead beautiful, but I might be more inclined to shave using the chubby.

just wondering if you could do a polo style handle, or even a kent style

I could try. It depends upon the wood type. The softer woods become the shape they want to because they break and tear on the lathe. I am playing with a number of styles. Send me a picture, and I can try to make one.

Thank you very much for the complement. The red cedar, with its marbling and colors is one of my favorite as well. And each is unique because the colors vary so much in each part of the wood.

1st brush: Really awesome job...bravo on this. I think this would also look really nice in burgundy colored wood.

2nd brush: This design seems like the wood is too light in color. I think with it being wood a darker color would look better especially with those dark bands in it, of course the wood would still need to be lighter than those bands.

3rd brush: I really like the unique shape of this one it's creative! I think it would look better if the domed end near the bristles was shortened a little or the handle part was lengthened.

4th brush: This one I think is spot on. I wouldn't change a thing about it!

By the way, I like your use of black walnut, it looks good!

Same here. I really like the rings.
