New Addition(s) to the Family

My wife popped in to an antique store today and picked up the following goodies for me: Gillette 1974 (code U1) Super Speed, faded old spice mug, and some NOS blades. All for $9.75!! Pretty sweet deal.

Is there any reason I should be wary about actually using the NOS blades?

I used some Blue Magic metal polish to remove some gunk and oxidation from the razor after soaking it in scrubbing bubbles. It is in very nice shape with zero rust.

Don't know about the NOS blades, but that is a great deal. I've been looking for an old mug like that for months and can't find one used around here.

There are some who use vintage blades, but I'm not one of them. I would think if they are stainless blades they may be usable.
I just did a few days with a similar Super Speed and found it great like most of the SS family.....Congrats!!

The NOS blades should be fine provided they're rust free,I've used clean vintage blades from the late 60's,40's and even some Gillette 3 hole blades with a 1918 date code and have gotten great shaves.
As a plus the older carbon/surgical steel work great in Grandpa's old DE honing rig so when they start getting a bit tuggy in they go and ready for another shave or two.

The NOS blades may not be too sharp. They may irritate your skin.

If the blades are stainless steel (not blue-black in color) they are potentially usable. As with new blades different brands perform differently. If they are Crystals (as another person posted) IIRC people have said they liked them. I don't remember that white package (common with Derbies and Feathers now) being used even twenty years ago so the blades may be post-2000 or so.

I think you are right on the money with that razor's manufacture date, the black plastic handle became popular with Schick and Gillette in the late 60's or so. Don't boil that particular razor, they had plastic parts in them which melt and distort, making the razor useless. I suspect that Old Spice mug is from the 40's or early 50's from what I have seen on here (sorry, I don't remember personally -- I am not THAT old yet).

Nice pick up! Those blades are modern Israeli stainless, use 'em. Anytime you can find an Old Spice mug for under $10, get it.

Crystals, like sledgehammer says.
