Neutrogena Shave Cream

I am very impressed with this shave cream. Let me say this: I am visually impaired and I have trouble seeing a good lather from a soap or in a bowl, so take that in to consideration. You must read the directions first, this is NOT a lathering cream and you do NOT use a brush. You wet your face and put the product on your hand and rub it on your face. It does not lather or foam and to me...it seems clear but very slick. I shave by feel anyway so the fact I did not have a lather did not bother me. I used a 57 Gillette SS and a Derby blade. I performed three passes...two WTG and the 3rd was ATG. My results were fantastic. I will go out on a limb here and say it is far better than my Williams shaves and even better than my VDH shaves. I think this is because I do not lather well. Give this cream another look. At $5 you can not go wrong.

I use the Neutrogena balm after-shave lotion. It is decent stuff, but it doesn't impress the pants off of me either.

The only problem I would have with this cream is that it is brushless... it takes most of the fun out of the shave. As far as it being better than your Williams shaves: that doesn't surprise me. I don't think Williams is very newbie-friendly after having tried it myself the other day. I know it has a small, loyal following, but I will not be buying it again. And if I was going to recommend a soap to a newbie it would definitely not be Williams. VDH on the other hand...

This a YMMV thing. I've found Neutrogena brushless to be less slick than lather I get from a traditional cream or shave soap. Don't get me wrong. It does lubricate, but my razor did not glide smoothly. I found I needed to apply pressure to my razor in order to shave. It does seem to protect from nicks and cuts though. As far as brushless goes, Kiss My Face and Headslick work a lot better for me.

I use Neutrogena Shave Cream regularly as a pre-shave.
I have been shaving with a straight razor for about 6 months now and I have found that putting on a pre shave, while I am stropping my razor, goes a long way toards giving me a smoother, easier straight shave. I have some TOB's preshave gel and I like it a lot, but Neutrogena works just as well at about one third of the price.
Plus, it is good for a quick touch up shave.
