I'm in the market for a neutral/natural to manly scented shea butter. I refuse to spend $40 on principle when I KNOW you can get the raw butter for less than a couple dollars a pound.
I buy fist size chunks of pure unrefined shea butter from an African food shop here in Amsterdam for €5.
Because it's pure and concentrated this will last me a long time, I use it mostly after shaving as a moisturizer but also my wife likes to have her feet rubbed with it (makes them extremely soft), as a lip balm, my hands (when dry from the cold weather). It's also a great hair pomade, keeps your hair/scalp healthy and shiny but you may find the smell lingers when used in the hair, you may not like that (on the skin it disappears when it's fully absorbed).
I found it better in ALL those areas than any specialized commercial cream there is but YMMV.
Only thing is you may not react well to it if you are allergic to nuts like peanuts etc. so if you have any allergies first try it on a small piece of skin like your wrist. Other than that it's great stuff and you will ask yourself why you paid so much for expensive commercial creams all this time.
My wife picked a small tub of unrefined, but scented, shea as a general moisturizer this winter. It works great and did wonders on my arms when I sampled some, but smells like wildflowers. It was also very expensive. I was just looking for a trustworthy source in the US.
The shea butter I ordered on Amazon was from the vendor Smellgood. It had the best customer review rating on Amazon and lots of repeat customers. 5 pounds unrefined shea butter in chunks not a solid block for $19 shipped. It was easy to work with. It needs to be filtered before use. I melted it at low temp in a open double boiler just enough to melt and not high temperature. I filtered it through a paper cone coffee filter. I am sure that cheese cloth would work well in a cone filter housing also. It worked fine. Six ounces took 15-20 minutes to filter and i changed the paper twice. The only thing i found as particlulate matter was a few blades of grass, it was pretty clean. It smelled like shea butter. Some sellers process with solvents this was not processed using that method. Worked fine. Very satisfied. Read the reviews.
