Need a recommendation on a better shaving cream/soap

Hello gents. For the past few years, I have used Gillette menthol shaving cream (the cheap stuff from the can) with the ProGlide 12 bladed cartridge that uses seven lubricating strips. I am fairly new to DE shaving and am now using the Merkur 38c HD with Feather or Astra SP blades. I purchased the Proraso green shaving soap and have been testing it. While I like the smell and tingle of it; it just does not give me the same smooth gliding ability of the Gillette shaving cream for my particular beard hairs. Was wondering if some of you veterans could recommend a common easy to buy and cheap shaving soap that lathers up thicker than the Proraso Green and helps for cutting with thicker beards?

(I also dont know if I should try the Proraso red stuff for thick beards but it seems a bit expensive and can only be ordered on Amazon here in the USA)

Appreciate any advice you vets could offer. - Thanks

I agree, but one thing I've noticed about people who love TOBS is that they seem to fall into two groups. When it comes to some of the scents (not inclusive), they either they prefer Eton College and Shave Shop, or they like Jermyn Street and St. James. Then there's the other scents as well, the preference of which are all over the map. Either way, you can't go wrong with TOBS--it's the best bang for the buck out there.

I have several good recommendations for you but since you specied the word "cheap",why dont you try Fraziers cream. Its cheap and a fairly good cream and does well on tough beards like mine and yours. If you're willing to spend more, try Trumpers Coconut.

Check out sites like Royal Shave, Italian Barber, West Coast Shaving or Bull Goose. All of them have great products at great prices.

But I would also recommend Fraser's for a less expensive cream.

Try Spencer and Devon. Phenomenal cream. Thick, Slick, cushiony, lathers very easily. The best I have tried. The tub is huge and a little bit goes a long way so it is a good value. Also, it ships free from Amazon.

I agree with everyone that has said TOBS. Eton College and Mr. Taylor are two of the first creams I bought, and they stay on my list of favorites.

If you are open to soaps I'd recommend Mike's Natural or Mystic Waters. I got samples of both recently and they are excellent!

I have a thick beard and soft skin. GFT (I use rose, almond and sandalwood) is the best I've tried. Not cheap but I wouldn't now be bothered going with any other cream.

+1 on the TOBS here just picked up some avocado and it really makes and nice creamy lather with a good layer of protection. About $13 or so on Amazon I think.

Love Proraso Red, but where I am (NY) I can think of at least 4 locations that sell it, so no shipping. There are other online vendors that sell it, but still, once you add in shipping it is not cheap.

All of the above are good selections, but I would also throw Cella into the mix. Super slick an smooth, and smells fantastic, at least to my nose.... importantly, it's a relatively low-cost option.
