What's new

Need a new watch

It will soon be time to replace my Timex. Not sure of model but it is a military type. Analog, OD plastic case, OD nylon strap, luminous points. No light, no date, no frills.

I'm hoping to get something analog, rock solid and inexpensive (i.e. damn near bullet proof). I love to looks of the nice big chronographs but cannot bring myself to lay out $500 - $2500 on a watch.

Any suggestions?

I just (within the last week) got a new watch. I ended got the $30 Timex Expedition from WalMart and put a Metal Watch Band on it. WR up to 50m, Analog Hand Dial; and it has a backlight for seeing the time after dark. Pretty simple and basic. I just can't verify for how tough it is as it is the first one I've had.

Could you be more specific about price range. You have effectively said that your price range is $0 to $499. Is that your range?

Check out West Coast Time. They have lots of terrific, well-made watches that should fit your requirements at a fair price. Also visit the Poor Man's Watch Forum. Great place.

I have been really happy with my two Citizen Eco-Drive watches. The first one I bought was the Titanium Chronograph seen below:

The second was the PVD Militaryhere:

For me they are fantastic reasonably priced watches. Both are solar powered and keep great time. The black one has survived several accidental hits to the face with no damage.

I can vouch for the toughness of this watch. I love mine, it also has pretty good lume, and looks great on zulu/nato bands or leather. I switch fairly often.

This really all depends on your price range, but like what was mentioned above, you can get some nice chronograph watches for <$250 (Citizen, Seiko, Wenger come to mind first, but there are many others as well.) Timex also has a few chronograph watches for ~$75
I picked this up at the local Costco for $100

If you give a more specific price range, more members will be able to give you better suggestions that you may like.

Happy hunting.

Thanks for the great suggestions guys. Lots of good choices I did not know about. I also never thought of checking out Costco. Thankfully my wife does any shopping that needs to be done there, but I will brave the crowds and check it out.

Thanks again!

I have been happy with Luminox which also makes the Navy Seal watches. Lots of "luminous" watches don't give much light but this one does. Mine hasn't taken a beating but seems solid enough. If you want it to stay truly watertight the factory has to do the battery replacements, otherwise you can get the kid at the mall to do it. Looks like they start around $300.

I love my new Tissot T-Touch titanium. They retail for over a $1000 but you can get them on the bay for less than $500. I paid $313 brand spankin' new just a month ago! Amazon is a great place to look for watches too.

I have heard from a few different jewelers that the Citizen Eco Drive watches are "rock solid" These guys are tops in their business and do a bunch of work making custom jewelry from scratch. I have also heard a few guys on here say the same thing.

You have a bunch on different styles, options, colors, etc. within this line and all are very reasonable.

I have had one for around 3 years and I am extremely hard on stuff.

+1 I've had a Citizen eco-drive for nearly 10yrs. works great to this day.

I just picked up this Seiko last week and I am loving it so far. It is also available in black, green, and tan. I lifted the image from Ebay seller "premierworld." They are in Singapore and have a bunch of authentic Seiko watches.

+1 on Seiko and Citize. Also Orient watches, which are superb mechanical watches. BTW, if you are looking for mechanical as opposed to quartz, try Seiko's "5" line, which are very affordable automatic watches. They are sold in Asia, but you can find them on line. Try here:

Also, here are some great sites where you can find incredible one-day deals on watches. I've puchased from these places without any problems and saved a ton on brand new watches. The Chronoshark site is fantastic, in particular. The Bllindaily site has a nice Seiko chronograph on sale today only. It retails for $535, and today it's going for $139.99.

+1. I have had my Citizen Eco-Drive for 5 1/2 years. It has been my everyday watch for this entire time and yet I have had no problems with it.

For those interested in a nice Seiko alarm chronograph, with GMT mode as well, Chronoshark has one at a ridiculous sale price today only. It's from the Coutura line, which is one of their better quartz lines. Retails for $575, and todayh only it's $169, brand new. I've purchased several watches from them, with no problems. Here's the link, if anyone's interested: http://www.chronoshark.com/
