Nearsightedness and Emergency Vehicles

Gents,
I have for you perhaps a rather unique situation that I could use some guidance on:
I am beginning to qualify to drive emergency vehicles for the volunteer fire and rescue squads that I am on; currently I am qualifying on the rescue, but within the next several months I will also be moving up to bigger rigs (read: giant arse aerial ladder....). Heres the issue, I am slightly nearsighted-- I can see fine, I just can't read at distance (last I checked I am about 20/30-40). Now since we are prehistoric and apparently don't have GPS's being able to read the street signs and numbers is muy importante!

Now Ill be honest, I never wear my glasses in my own vehicle because I don't actually need them to function, but now that I am being trusted with vehicles that cost more than some houses, I need something virtually indestructible; I have tried contacts and they don't work for me, so glasses it is-- think Birth Control Glasses.

Any suggestions on BCG type glasses? Cheap is good, because indestructible never is, and I would ideally like to get a couple pairs so that I can leave a pair at each station..

I bought my last glasses from the Australian equivalent, and it all went very smoothly. Much cheaper than buying from the optometrist. You will still need to see one to get your prescription, though. And make sure they give you the measurement between your pupils. You will need that, and the eye docs always try to keep it to themselves to make it harder to buy online.

The other option is to buy everything from the eye doc, and that is good because you are keeping a local business going. Up to you.
