What's new

Naive Beginner

What blades would you suggest for a beginner to DE shaving? I have minimal experience with cartridge razors and have mostly used electric shavers.

My hair is pretty thick

Great advice. All I can add is that, if you buy a new Merkur, which is how many of us start out, dropping in the Merkur blade and going at it isn't a good way to judge wet-shaving. That is exactly what I did, and I didn't get good shaves until I used a different blade brand.

+1, Only one missing would be the red ip's but there are some very good blades in this sampler.

I ordered 100 of the Red Pack Israeli Personnas on reputation alone, and am glad that I did. I am still waiting on my sampler pack to arrive though and I hope to find many other good blades to stock up on... Give a bunch a try and have fun with it.

You can't go wrong with Red Packs! If you like them, you'll probably like the Blue Israelis (Crystals). At $10-$12/100blades, they're a real bargain!

Red Pack Israeli Personnas are great blades for smoothness/forgiveness.

I would suggest a Gillette Tech razor to use in the beginning, they're almost impossible to murder your face with.

I actually started out with a Gillette (black handled) Adjustable Slim razor. When I started shaving DE, I started out on '1' for a few days, then '2' and '3' until my technique improved and I was comfortable shaving on each setting without nicks. Finally, I ended up on '5' for most blades, but '7' on some cheaper blades like the Wally World Personnas.

+ whatever for the suggestion of a sample pack.

I think that I'm in the minority around here, but I started out with Feather blades, and not a sample pack. They are reputed to be among the sharpest available, but if you treat them with the respect that ANY *ahem* razor-sharp blade deserves, you should be just fine.

No blade deserves fear. They all deserve respect.:w00t:

Yes sample pack. It might cost more per blade but is better than having 99 blades you don't like.
