Nagura for JNAT

cleanshaved

I’m stumped
There are many Nagura options for a JNAT.
I am about to buy my first stone for finishing and want one Nagura...........well for now at least.
will any JNAT Nagura do?

I'll let Gamma weigh in, but for razors there are 5 used

Botan-->Tenjou-->Mejiro-->Koma--Tomo

Course---------------------------->Fine

You could get away with maximizing the edge on a coticule, synthetic, etc and then just using a Tomo (means same) and finishing on the base stone

You can almost get the same edge this way, it is a better edge IMO if you go through the entire progression (more polish edge, smoother)

Thanks Doc. Have been finishing on a 12K Naniwa. want to drop this stone out, intend to max out on the 4/8k norton then onto the JNAT.
This is my starting point. would like to move to more naugras at a later date.

12K Naniwa to a JNAT with a Tomo would/should work just fine. If you like the Naniwa edges, you are going to love the JNAT edges. I don't like the feel of the naniwa edge, very scratchy

I recently bought an Ozuku Asagi Koppa from chefknivestogo.com for $70 shipped. I then bought a botan nagura, mejiro nagura, and a tomo nagura for $114 shipped. Take into account the botan and mejiro are mikawa and not asano. Here are the exact links to the naguras I purchased:

Tomo - http://yhst-27988581933240.stores.y...l-whetstone--approximately--1344g-134448.html

Mejiro - http://yhst-27988581933240.stores.y...fine-grit-like-tenjo-or-mejiro-48o481344.html

Botan - http://yhst-27988581933240.stores.y...nagura-medium-high-grit-botan-77oz772156.html

That Botan was (IMO) fairly large and could have purchased one about half that size for about $20 less. Hope that helps.

english?

I guess I'm unsure of you question? Basically I paid $185 for the Jnat and all of the naguras to be able to one stone hone on my Jnat.

There are more than 2 ways to skin this cat, however I think the jump from 8k to a tomo slurry might be kinda difficult without at least a mejiro in between.

Gamma may have tried out your intended combo before

Okay, so I have this Nakayama Kiita. Per Doc's post Tomo means same, so if I were in the market for a Tomo for the linked stone I would want to look for a Nakayama Kiita Tomo?

Ideally, yes. But the quality edge depends on both the quality of the main and slurry stone.

At the risk of creating rage in yet another sector of the universe - the 8k Norton is only about 5k JIS.. Jumping to the Jnat from there is possible but to reap all the benefits, your edge will need to be spot-on maxed-out with the 8k.

Asano Nagura are Mikawa Nagura. The difference is that the ones that are stamped are 'inspected' and 'graded'. I have a bunch of stamped, and a bunch of non-stamped.. they all work very well. If you read somewhere that non-stamped Nagura will eat your babies - it ain't true. Caveat - there is junk Nagura out there, and some of it is counterfeit Asano-stamped stuff. it's been reported that it's garbage and it can hurt your steel. I've not seen any of this rogue Nagura myself though. ... but I believe the story.

I've jumped from each; 1k, 2k, 3k, 5k, 8k, 10k JIS - to Tomo slurry. My happy point was 8k. Your mileage will vary here for sure.

There are no rules - if the Tomo is clean, it should work. color is less of a factor than one might think... but it's nice to have a matching Tomo. I've used an Okudo Suita Tomo Nagura on a Nakayama Tomae stone... or maybe it was Namito - whatever, it was fine. Nothing horrible happened.. worked pretty well too.

@ Gamma - don't worry about creating rage in yet another sector of the universe with me. I don't hold the Norton up on a pedestal.
They have served as a good intro for me but long term the jury is still out. A coticle may be my next move but that is another story.
plan of attack now goes like this. Will hone with my normal setup and add the JNAT after the 12k. This will show me the difference from there and time to learn the JNAT.
next step will be to drop the 12K out and go from the 8k to the JNAT.
All I need to know is it can be done and I will give it a crack. nothing ventured nothing gained.

If your edges are in the 8-12k range truly shave ready, all you need is Mejiro and a Tomonagura for your Jnat.
