Mystery hones... Let's see what you have

wid, 4" is indeed a thuri. Probably from a carving kit a'la estima. Those were packaged with 4" thuri's.
I almost bought a german etching kit just for the thuri, but it was $50 and its not too hard to find at minimum a 5". 5"x1"x1" ia one of my favorite sizes for finishers. I got an 8x2 surgical black but ive been thinking about getting a 5x1x1 cut by dan. If you chamfer the edges they slip in and out of a pocket smoothly, great for work. I got one of the black la lunes in that size and it perfect for touching up blades throughout the day at work. 10 strokes and my knife is shaving sharp again. It's not bad for chisels too but i can get a chisel shaving sharp(will treetop hairs) off my hard/ fine washita VERY quickly and it'll do the whole range of everything. White washitas are nearly impossible to beat, which is why i buy every one i find that isn't priced insanely(which the are plenty of insanely priced ones).

New stone is currently taking a bath, but the honing surface came clean quick. It was in a wooden base with a quarter inch layer of oil(and lots of kerosene) and grime under it and it was fused to the base but the wood was deteriorating badly so it was easy to get out. Some feels pretty fine, dense and it has a clink similar to my translucent arks. I haven't lapped the surface yet but it feels like glass. The white/ grey area doesn't feel different from the darker part, they are under the surface, kind of a holographic effect. First and last 2 pictures are of the top honing surface, last one is dry.

Here's the slurry and the surface lapped. It's not flat but it give a better look. When i took it outside into sunlight this little grey rock lit up a holographic green color. It looks almost like a dark jade, i don't know if my crappy phone will pick up the subtleties. First 2 pictures are in sunlight. The sides are kinda starting to look like the stone is layers. Maybe a slate.

(Interested to see what others think, but I'm leaning heavily toward Idwal on this...)

Got it cleaned more and lapped but i don't know how much is going to show up in the pictures. Beautiful stone with a wonderful clink. Pretty sure it's a lyn idwal. I like it, I'm moving right now but i can't wait to put some time in on this stone and figure out its range. It perked up the edge on my knife very nicely.

A friend picked this up online, it's not a finisher but quite fine. Any ideas what it might be?

Yeah thats a washita, one of my all time favorite stones, I buy them all the time because the fine ones can handle almost the entire range for honing knives and razors. At least my hard/fine one can. Get that sucker dunked in simple green. I bet it comes out almost white after a couple weeks but it'll take months to get all the oil out.

Pulled another rock out of my mystery box. 7x2 1/2 inches of purple goodness. I thought it was just a purple slate until I lapped. Then the green orbs started to show on the side and surface once I cut thru the oxidation. Also a nice swirled surface showed itself. Stone is not too hard with a fine finishing grit feel it it. Thinking it is a possible Welsh Slate, but I been wrong before. Outside pictures, 2 wet, 2 dry

So apparently there were two types of stones sold as Yellow lake, the grey one, often sold under the Salmen label, and a purple one with green dots. I think your stone speaks Welsh.

It certainly could be the Purple type of Llyn Melynllyn from what I've seen of them. Though I think visually they can be almost identical to LaL and 'Vosgienne'.

Actually, they sold more stone types from different quarries than that. There are a thread or two you can search around for where several labeled/boxes examples are shown.

Thanks gentlemen for the research and info. After thinking Welch, I leaned towards France. I decided on Lune over Vos not only by visual clues, but by feedback and hand feel. It definitely likes oil over water and does has a slight glazed feel to it. I have use several times and I am liking the results

Newly arrived small stone
60x50x6 mm.
Found in a old barber shop
It's a coticule i guess
what do you think about this stone

Man that stone is beautiful! Even if it's a terrible hone it's still worth having I'd say. Kinda looks like a super old les latneuses.
Thank you @Empire straights
It is beautiful
Oh Yes
What do you mean when you say terrible hone: the size or the honing properties
I don't mind the size - one of my favorite finishers is the same size and I'm used to
Work with it
I will give him a try tomorrow
I'm sure i'm going to keep it
Maybe a new walnut box
And some more pics in the next Arko August
Thank you for sharing your option
Best regards

I meant the honing properties but I highly doubt that will be the case. It should be an amazing stone. I like smaller stones better to be honest. 4"-6"x1.5"x1" is my favorite size hone for razors and knives I've got stones that are 1x1x2.5 that I sharpen razors on regularly.
