Hi all. So - as a newbie i heeded everyone's advice and just finished my first six months, sticking to the same razor and cream, and trying different blades from a sampler pack, until i got my DE shaving and lathering techniques nailed (always get a DFS shave if not better) and picked a blade I liked. (Gillette Red Tip SS, T&H unscented cream, Personna blade - if you care). To celebrate my six month "graduation" I went to the Pasteur Pharmacy on 34th Street in Manhattan today, after reading a lot of good reviews here, to go pick out some new stuff to try to indulge my newfound hobby.
I've posted a pic of the swag I came home with as my graduation presents (so much for saving money using a DE).
Not only can I not wait to try out all this goodness, but I cannot say enough good things about Pasteur's. Great great great selection as has been written. But more importantly, great and knowledgeable service. Leon, one of the owners, hunted me down after I paid for my stuff, and dragged me back to the shaving aisle, plied me with all sorts of free samples to try, told me about all sorts of new stuff they've gotten in, took my name and insisted I call ahead of time next time I come so he can put together a pack of samples for me to try.
He asked me how I heard about the place, when I tod him B&B he nodded sagely and grinned, and asked if I'd be so kind as to put in a good word on here - since it is expensive for them to carry so much variety of stock in a niche product, in a store where the rent and thus shelf space is obscenely expensive. So consider this the good word - if you live or work in the tri-state area, COME VISIT AND SHOP. If you are here from out of town, likewise! You won't regret it (except for the dent in your wallet)
PS - any comments or critiques on my "presents" are welcome!
