What's new

My Tulip doth shed

Well, I got one of the new Simpsons Tulip 2's in two band super. I love the brush but I believe it is a shedder. It lost a few hairs during the first two weeks of use, a little more than I'm used to seeing but nothing unusual. I've been lucky with all my prior brushes where initial hair loss has been pretty much non-existent. This last week it has been dropping at least ten and now more like twenty hairs per shave, every shave with no sign of letting up.

I bought it from a reputable vendor who will take the brush back but currently has no stock of these. I'll continue to use it and see if this stops while waiting for more stock to arrive. If it stops I'll keep the brush as I love the little sucker. We'll see.

Motto of the story. Buy from a reputable vendor.

Dave its a shame that the brush is a shedder.:frown: Thank goodness you are not going to get hosed on the return!

Oh, that sucks! My 2-band tulip is my new muse. If it starts shedding hairs I am going to quit shaving (yeah right).

I'd like to add my experience thus far with my Polo 10 Super in two band.

My Polo 10 Super in two band is shedding about 4~5 hair per shave.

I am letting it go for a while but if by month's end it hasn't stopped I am going to be contacting Brett at Vulfix to discuss options.

So far I have about 50 hairs that have accumulated over 10 or so shaves with the brush.

I hope mine calms down soon.

ack, my tulip shed two hairs today :frown: Not going to panic, yet. But, I hope this isn't a sign ...

All these Simpsons threads make me very uncertain about purchasing one... I know it is not an accurate representation of their brushes as a whole (people who own a Simpsons brush with no problems are less likely to post about it), it still makes me nervous!

It's good to see Vulfix still making Simpson's brushes but someone needs to tell them that the shedding in the original Simpson's was a defect and not a feature of the brush.

True, but you hear more about problems with Simpsons than with Rooneys, Shavemacs, etc.

What a drag. I feel like I have seen a few similar threads about the Simpsons 2 band brushes -- I wonder if they had a bad batch of adhesive at the factory?

FWIW, I had a similar experience with a Rooney 1/2 I bought a couple of months ago -- perfect for a couple of weeks before it started shedding like crazy. Fortunately, like you, I bought from an established dealer. He made it right, and with absolutely no fuss.

You got it exactly right: Reputable Dealer = Peace of Mind.

That's why I prefer to deal with places like West Coast Shaving or Vintage Blades -- they stand behind what they sell.

Well it's been one month or so and I have used this brush about half of the shaves that I have had since I posted. It is still shedding but to a lesser degree. For the last 5 shaves it has only shed 1~2 hairs per shave. As a result I have decided to give it another month at least. But if there is a shed 'surge' I will be in contact asap. I love the PL10 in this two band super. I love it and I would hate to see it sent back. And to be perfectly honest if it is only 1 or 2 hairs a shave I think I can live with that in the long term. I am keeping a written record of the lost hair. I rarely use the brush more than 2 or 3 days in a row though. This is just a FYI post for those who are interested.

I have the same shedding problem with my new (4 months old) chubby 2 two band brush. After using it around 25-30 times and loosing only a few hairs it started to shedding more than 20 at every shave:nono:.I have already contact Lee and iam waiting to learn if iam going to sent the brush buck to him or to Vulfix.I have experienced this shedding problem 2 years ago with another simpson chubby 3 and even iam a big fan of simpsons i can not give them another excuse on quality matters...

Mine has been shedding nonstop, at least ten hairs every shave, sometimes more like twenty. This is after about two and a half months of constant use so I can definitively say I gots a shedder. I was hoping it would calm down and I would simply keep the brush but at this point it's not the case.

I purchased from a reputable vendor (West Coast Shaving) so I am not worried at all about the return - just waiting for some more stock to come in.

It's a shame you and others have had to deal with this. I would have thought after what went on a few years back with their shedding brushes, that Vulfix would have gotten a beat on this. I went through it with a three-band T3 last year. Simpsons owners seem to have suffered out of proportion to the whole. I assume that Vulfix will eventually fix this as they did before, but what a pain in the meanwhile. Worst-case scenario, I've gone brushless before when I had to and never lost a finger in the process.

This is interesting because y'all say Vulfix and I know they rebranded Simpson, but I have two Vulfix brand brushes, have used them for about 4 years now and neither has shedded since the initial "brand new" shedding part of a brush out of the box. Interesting situation.

This thread is scaring me. I am planning on buying a 2-band Tulip 2, but all of this gives me pause. My Shavemac hasn't lost more than 2 hairs, ever...

What I do with a brush that seems to be shedding more than might be expected is swirl the brush in my palm as if I were lathering on a puck of soap. Then I hold it by the handle and flick it vigorously say 10 times as if I was shaking the water out of it and check for loose bristles sticking up.

If there are any I repeat the process until I get to the point where it stops losing hair. I also notice whether the bristles that are coming out are long or short. If they are short they are breaking off rather than coming out of the knot from down deep.

Somehow I think this is better than the down deep variety. Perhaps the maker didn't comb out the stray bristles. I've only had to return one brush out of more than twenty in the past few years.
