What's new

My first tallow experience

So after one year of DE and straight shaving I tried my first tallow soap today. It was a sample of Prairie Creations Tallow and Lanolin soap. Since I tried creams with Lanolin before and really like them I thought this soap would be very interesting, and not as expensive as MWF.

I've shaved twice with my straight so far and I love it. I get really good shaves and the soap feels great on my face. I wasn't able to get as thick lather as I do with my other soaps/cream but the lather I got was very slick and dense still. I guess I need some more practice.

So maybe this tallow thing is something to look more into :001_rolle

Soap quality varies greatly from vendor to vendor (tallow or not). MWF currently sits at the top of the heap for me. Out of curiosity, what were you using before (most people go in for the tallow hype right off the bat and then start branching out into veggie soaps)

I've been primarily using VDH soap. Recently gave Williams a try and just love it. For me it gave a much smoother, closer shave. I suspect it has to do with the tallow.

I agree that the quality vary a lot. I've trying some soaps/creams before so I think I have a decent base to compare with: MB, Omega, SCS, Shetland soap company, Noxzema, Godrej, Cyrill Salter, T&H, Institute Karite etc. I'd say this soap ranks among the better I've tried :thumbup1:

Palmolive stick and Arko stick are two really fabulous tallow based soaps that are cheaper than cheap ... you'll likely pay more for shipping.

Still need to try Arko (keep trying to justify to myself that I need the 15 sticks for $17 from amazon). Palmolive on the other hand is one of my absolute favorite soaps. Super cheap as well - you can get 2 sticks for about $6.50 delivered from eBay. I've been working on 1 stick pretty regularly and after 3 months of using 4-5 times a week, there is still a decent bit left.

i still cant figure out the difference between a tallow an triple milled soap as regards make, its durablity life. and its performance

You won't notice the difference tallow makes until your technique is good enough to eliminate other problems. It's not a cure all for bad shaves.

As for triple milled, etc - triple milled soaps last longer because they contain less moisture. Tallow is an ingredient. Triple milling is a manufacturing process. Triple milled soaps can contain tallow but they don't have to.
