MY first restore for someone else

proxy.php

This handle is copper plated, unsure of base material but not very hard, lead? Has quite a bit of plate loss but looks very neat.

Knot is a Super Silvertip, very soft tips but feels like it has some nice back bone too. Set at 55mm loft (was a VERY tight fit...)

Had to sand the top of the handle flat and sand out the interior diameter a fair bit.

All in all it was lots of fun, learned some new tricks. Was my first restore for someone else and first restore with a metal handle.

Nice work and I am contemplating a metal handle for a try at refurbing.

Did you have to expand the hole at all, and if so, did you do it just by sanding ?

Not having a metal lathe, I was wondering how to go about that.

Very nice work! That is my handle, by the way. Munxcab and I traded some work and "stuff", and he did the work for me. So, can I say, I can hardly wait to put it in my hands for a test run!

The background is that my regular brushes are two horse hair brushes. But, when the brush handle in Munxcab's posting came into my possession along with some straight razors, I knew I had to try it.

Thanks, Munxcab for your hard work!

Yes I did. I tried using a dremel but what worked the best/fastest was just 100 grit paper. First thing I did was "lap" the top of the handle flat, it was kind of wavy and uneven, and also angle in towards the middle. After doing that I just wrapped some more paper around a piece of hose I use for hand sanding straights and just twisted it around and around inside.

It was shockingly effective at removing this material. I also had to taper the plug on the knot some to get it in. I was hoping to give some loft options, but took what I could get and settled for having the plug all the way in, putting it at about 55mm.

The knot Larry provided seems to have some great back bone, as well as mega soft tips. I didn't try it out (don't want to deflower his brush!) but dry it feels softer than my super silvertip TGN knot.

Can't wait to see some blooming pictures once he gets it.
