What's new

My first GEM-a Damaskeene in the den

We here at B&B are some sick fellows. You would think with about 40 razors in the den my AD would be under a bit of control. Not a chance. After last week's aquisition of four new Schick injectors, perhaps there would be some fullfillment, some satisfaction. Not a chance. What do I do? Go to the Single Edged Razor forum and start reading about GEMS. I never wanted one before, I just didn't get it. Curiosity got the best of me, though, and off to the 'bay I went--got a nice 1912 and this gorgeous cased Damaskeene. The later came in today, and I couldn't stand it....had to try, even though all I had in the way of blades were some utility single edged blades from my toolbox. I read somewhere that people used those, and I just couldn't wait for the Treets to come in.

So, I lathered up and went for it. Made about a 1 inch pass before I realized that the blade was about as sharp as a rusty lawnmower blade. Finished with my slant. Gee...I HOPE it was the blade and NOT the razor. I'll have to give an updated report when the Treets come in. She's a beaut, though.

You did a whole 1 inch pass before you realized the utility blades weren't for shaving? :scared:

Wait on the Treets....you'll love the Damaskeene.

Or you could run down to a Walgreens or CVS and get some stainless Gem blades today and not have to wait.

Stopped at Walgreen's today and got some GEM by Personna coated blades. Gonna try them in the morning......can't wait!

Had a really bad shave with a 1924 Shovelhead the other day. After reading this post, I pulled out my Damaskeene and moved the once used blade over to it. What a difference!

BBS, smooth a silk. Love the Damaskeene!

I was out of town on a fishing trip for a few days, but returned yesterday, settled back, did all the right face prep, and used the Damaskeene with a proper blade. The shave was easy, smooth as silk, and BBS. The razor seemed to just glide across my face on all three passes. I had no weepers, no irritation, no burn. This razor is a great tool, and frankly a beautiful work of art. Glad I got it, and hope to put it in a regular rotation.
