Mustache help!!!

Well, I have made the leap into straight razor shaving. After three or four shaves, my confidence has improved and I am now able to get a BBS shave on my cheeks and chin. However, my mustache area is a problem. I shaved ATG with my DE to make my stubble disappear, but that is a no no with the straight I presume. Any advice to get the upper lip smoother? I am active duty and need to look sharp...of course as a fair skinned guy with a thick black 'stache' that's tough. PLEASE HELP! :)

I usually go down (N-S) on the upper lip then middle toward ear and then outer toward centre (ear to middle). I never go up, even with a DE.

I do the mustache last to let the area soften the most. Others feel it should be tackled first because the edge is in the best shape when you start. I start WTG and then do a XTG starting from the corners with an a slight up motion. Think drawing a line from the corner of your mouth to your nostril. For the ATG I always start from the corner but go straight up trying to compress my lip, like trying to suck in your upper lip. This gives me BBS every time.

This has been my challenge spot for a while - just above the corners of my lips.

I sometimes got it just right - then promptly forgot how I did it!

Currently I'm trying:

1. North-South
2. XTG (Ear to nose)
3.Touch up on the corners
- Blade pretty flat
- Light circular motion - in XTG/ATG direction

I used to overdo it (pressing too hard, spending too much time trying to 'fix' it) and get razor burn. BUT - I thiink I might have it sorted out now...

Keeping the blade flat and light seems to be the key.

All the best,
Michael.

time will help - if youre only a few shaves in you cant be expecting BBS, once youre a bit futher along you can go ATG with a straight, but I wouldnt recommend it just yet

That is the one area I rarely go ATG...usually the last pass is somewhere between XTG and ATG. It isn't as close as it could be, but pretty damn presentable.

The first time you go ATG on the mustache area is difficult, but after that it's pretty easy since your nose will no longer be in the way

The only way I've been able to get true BBS on the 'stache is ATG with a scary sharp blade. Have to keep the angle really low too otherwise I get weepers and burn. I just do a WTG pass and then an ATG pass. BBS every time.
