Modern Personna Blades to Vintage Personna blades

Hello Gentleman,

I am a big fan of Personna blades, I use what I can find these days; usually the red and black pack, I find them many times at the dollar tree. I've seen a blue pack with a red stripe a couple of times as well. I have always really loved a double edge razor, both of my grandfathers used one and Ithe always used Personna blades as well. When my grandfather died, he left me a Gillette Aristocrat from the 40's with a few Personna blades from the same time. I tried to attache some pictures to show what I am talking about. I really likeg these few old Personna razors they really provided a smooth shave.

This may be addressed somewhere in another forum but I was wondering what modern Personna blade is equal to the vintage personna blades?

I shave on occasion with the same NOS Personna blades in your photo. They are twice as thick as thick as blades made today and can be honed, as they are made from carbon steel. If you enjoy the shave from a carbon-steel blade, I suggest you try either the Treet "Classic" blades or their "Black Beauty" blades which have a blued coated finish.

I use both types and as long as you give your razor a swish in isopropyl alcohol after each use, the hold up well without rusting.

Thank you for the infor mation, I will certainly give the Treet blades a try. The Black Beauty blades are quite interesting, the actually look just like a special forces knife I own LOL. I will probably go woth the Classic model.

I haven't used the NOS Personna's, but the new one's (Labs/Meds) have become my favorite blade after trying about 20 different varieties. Almost as sharp as a Feather, but very smooth shave.

FWIW, beautiful 46-47 Aristocrat you have there. By far my favorite safety bar razor out of the 20 or so I have owned.

Thanks, I love this old razor; the old stuff is definately the best. I am actually waiting on an order of Lab Blue Personnas to come in the mail. I'll post a review about them after I give them a try.

I have no experience with any NOS or carbon-steel blades so I can't speak to that. I do heartily endorse and suggest you try the Personna Supers (Labs/Meds). They are a very good blade and are tied with Astra SP as my every day blade. You can get them for about $13/100.

Yeah, I noticed that myself. It's totally awesome how much money I save getting double edge blades as compared to the cartridge heads for my Mach3 or Fusion Proglide. Seriously 12-Mach3 or even worse 8-Fusion Proglide catridges is $30! You get so many more blades that shave so much better for literally half the price!!

I've literally been kicking myself for the past couple of weeks seeing how much money I could have saved all those years before!

You can save money...until you get the AD...then it's more blades and razors and soaps and creams and brushes...:tongue_sm

Yes, I have tried the ones in Wal-Mart, they aren't bad. Right now I'm waiting on a bulk of 100-Personna Lab Blue blades, and a bulk of 100-Treet Classic.

Possibly the best DE blade ever made was the Personna 74, being discussed in another thread or two right now. One guy has over 30 shaves on one and it is still going strong. Even at a buck a pop for NOS P74, it is still cheaper than carts. Back when I first started shaving, these, and Gillette Spoilers, were my favorite blades.

The new lab prep personnas are quite good, and reasonably priced. You won't be disappointed.
