Milk, splash, balm?

I'm thinking of attempting aftershave. o.o

SCS has aftershave balms, milks, and splashes. There's a splash that just treats your skin but has no fragrance; then there's Bay Rum balm, and Bay Rum with a Twist milk. And a few other nice ones matching their colognes.

What's the difference? I can understand matching BR/BRT interchangeably with the colognes of the same pedigree, but what's with the balm/milk/splash?

Balm and milk, not sure of the difference. Possibly the ingredients. I think milk is a coined name, not really meaning anything. I dunno, maybe they put goats' milk in there.

Splashes are usually very liquid. Like water or cologne consistency. A balm is usually much thicker. Like a lotion.

So, one's like putting water in your hand, the other like lotion. And, it seems that splashes have a highER alcohol content.

A milk is very liquid, almost as thin as a splash, but not clear, and usually not alcohol based. Think of it as a lighter balm, a little more comfortable for warm, humid conditions.

I'm uncomfortable with lotions and oily grease stuff, so ok.

My typical aftershave is alum

SCS's samples are amazing, cheap, large, the shipping is quick, the shipping costs are low, and they gave me a free sample (with my samples!).

So now that you know that I think that their stuff is great, I really didn't like the splashes. And it's nothing against SCS, but I got 2 of their splashes with alcohol, and I found out.... I hate alcohol on my face!! I hope Sue will response (or I'll just email her), but I'd like to know how much alcohol is in their lime and Woods splashes. The milks and balms I got are great but the splashes light my face on fire.

Also their samples are amazing. I wish ever vendor sold 1/2 oz samples (which is actually quite large) for $2.50. What a deal!

The big thing with the samples is, as you pointed out with the aftershave, you can get some use out of them without buying a full product; I think the 4mL EDT straws give me like a week of use? At that point I can buy a 60mL bottle for $14 rather than 4mL for $3.50 (i.e. 60mL == $52.50). It's still a rip-off for product, but they're packaged with an atomizer and glass vial.

Better paying $10 for 4 overpriced samples than $60 for 4 generously priced bottles and finding out you don't like any of these particular products. Maybe I'll pick up some aftershave samples with my full bottles of BR, BRT, and NS; I've found these colognes aren't absolutely disgusting like most alcohol-choking stuff I've smelled.

If you want something that would moisturize your skin you should go whit a balm or a milk.
I found that splash, that contains alcohol are good when you had a very irritating shave.

This is what's happening to me. I'm making 4 full passes with feathers (WXxA), and grinding right through when it starts getting irritating. Blade buffing problem areas (by sliding backwards, redepositing the lather as lubrication and taking it back up again). Hand-applying stuff squeezed from the brush for a final pass.

It takes an hour for my skin (which gets a cold water splash, 2 minutes with alum on it, and more cold water) to stop feeling stretched and tight. The remaining shave ... you can see and feel stubble, if you really look and really feel; but sliding your hand against the grain won't pick up any feedback, you really gotta dig in to feel it, it's short enough not to have a grain direction. But I pay for that.

This is why I'm moving to a straight razor :cursing:

I purchased Mama Bear's summer milk AS earlier this year and don't think I'll be able to stop using it for the winter, I like it so much. The peppermint in it certainly lets you know where you shaved too close, but really helps. I had been using the Nivea AS for sensitive skin, but it gets too greasy by the end of the day. I believe Mama Bear's also has witch hazel in it.

Different things work for different people. All I'll contribute is that Sue's splashes and milks are amazing and work for multiple shave situations (rough shave, good shave etc).

You can't go wrong trying her stuff out!

There is 57% SD (special denatured) alcohol content in Lime and Woods Splash. For comparison, in Hydro, the low-alcohol splash, the content is 35%.

The alcohol is 'perfumers alcohol', not to be confused with isopropyl alcohol or special denatured alcohol at a hardware store; (contrary to some, it is a solvent).

Many cannot use an alcohol based splash and some really enjoy the 'burn'.

It really is important to know your skin type to choose an appropriate aftershave. Your needs may also change seasonally with weather temperature and humidity.

Thanks Sue! How should I dilute the splashes? With either plain water or witch hazel? They smell great, I know some people love to "feel the burn," but I'm not one of them.

BTW, Bay Rum with a Twist has turned out to be my favorite. :)

You're going at it too hard, IMO. I don't think a straight is going to fix it; if you can't get a comfortable shave with a DE and Feathers, a straight won't be any more forgiving, just because it's sharper.

I focus on getting the most comfortable shave I can, and the results follow, not going for the results as priority. Trying AS and such is not going to fix technique. If your skin is stretched and tight, no don't need more alcohol on top of the Alum astringent, you need moisturiser.

Try leavng your face and hands wet which will add a small amount of dilution. You could also use one of those tiny paper cups and dilute it. I would not suggest you add water to the bottle and definately not witch hazel. The splash doesn't contain WH. If this doesn't work there is BST. HTH.

Happy to read you are enjoying BRWAT.

First of all, Sue, you are great. Second, this is what I do and it cuts out the burn almost completely. Just don't dry your face after rinsing off the excess soap at the end, and the water on your face should make it so the product doesn't sting.

+1

splash = full liquid + alcohol

milk = liquid + moisturizer, runny

balm = full moisturizer, creamy

I used the splashes during the summer. I tried Hydro, Lime, and Mediterranean Citrus. They all have their strong points. I kind of stuck to Lime for awhile because it gave me such good feedback about the quality of my shave. Then I migrated to Mediterranean Citrus because it has a bit of menthol that kicks in about a minute after you apply it and it feels soothing.

Now I have two of her "milks," and I find them both very nice. They are Bay Rum with a Twist and Oakmoss Lavendula. They are sort of halfway between a balm and a splash; namely, they are thin but not clear liquids. They go in very smoothly and feel great. I put them on when my face is damp but not wet; after gently blotting dry with a towel. They seep into the face completely within minutes, leaving no stickiness behind. They make my face feel incredibly smooth and moisturized without looking shiny or feeling tacky.

In short, the "milks" are wonderful, especially for this time of year. I think I like the Bay Rum with a Twist best, but they are both really nice.

Thanks, Sue, for making such great products and for providing samples at such a great price!

What splashes did you get? I was thinking of placing an order with scs, and knowing what specific splashes "light your face on fire" would be very helpful. Thanks.

Sue, for us civilians out there, what does BST stand for? And what does HTH stand for? Thanks any decoding assistance.
