milder than Progress @1 ?

Hi,

According to the gap length table, the smallest one is the Merkur progress @1.
But there is more to mildness/aggressiveness than just the gap. There is also the angle of the blade, etc. At least I think so...

Has anyone had a chance to compare the Feather Popular and the Merkur Progress? or point me to an even milder razor than the Merkur?

Thanks,
Erez

I don't know if the following are milder than a Progress at setting 1 but they are pretty mild.

  • Edwin Jagger DE89 Series
  • Muhle R89
  • Gillette Tech
  • Gillette Blue Tip Super Speed
  • Feather AS-D1

Well I can't say that I've used a progress, but the feather popular is VERY mild. Your blade angle has to be absolutely perfect to get it to cut. Once you get the hang of it though, it gives a great shave. Btw, don't be fooled with the plastic handle and think it cheaply made. It's still very high quality.

I have both razors: the Merkur Progress is more effective than the AS-D1, even when the Progress is completely locked down. Because the Progress razors are not calibrated, I'll assume by #1 that you mean the razor is locked down, turned as far to the left as possible. For me, I'll take the Progress any day. It's a far more efficient razor and because it's adjustable you'll all the latitude you could want in setting the razor's gap. I've had close shaves with the razor set to #1 (lock-down position on mine), closer than the Feather; and when set on #2.5, the shave is smooth, clean, and comfortable.

My gillette slim set to 1 is so mild that it barely cuts my hair at all. Its the only way I can go against the grain on my neck hair. If you can pick one up for a good price on ebay it might be a good option.

note: I have a progress and the first 3 settings on the slim feel more mild than my progress at 1 IMHO.
