Metal inlay in acrylic scales

From going over the archives & using search, I know that the easiest way is to do an overlay.

I did see one thread where they talked about using a soldering iron to heat up the inlay & melt it into the scales. "I'll let you know how it went" was the last post :(

Has anyone tried that, and how were the results?

This sounds interesting. I really must try this. I can see the concept working as acrylic gets quite soft even when grinding. I would be more inclined to take the metal inlay and preheat it to 300-350 in a toaster over rather than using a soldering iron. Sounds like I have something to experiment with this week!

I already picked up some 0.01" thick brass sheeting, need to pick up some acrylic tomorrow.

You might be able to use a torch as well, if you're careful. Drop it on the acrylic and press it in with a wood block. Let us know how it turns out.

I'm also willing to bet preheating the acrylic will help reduce the differential and heat transfer. The goal would be to find the ideal temp to melt but not burn the acrylic. I have an adjustable wattage soldering iron I may try, and also preheating the inlay.

What about a heat gun...or would that not be precise enough in delivering the heat.

Likely too hot. Most that are used for paint stripping get upwards of 400*F+. I bet a coffee warmer would be good, or boiling water.

Once my sons birthday party and such is over this weekend I will get some time in the shop to experiment.

A heat gun could work to soften the acrylic, but I think you'll still need specific heat on the inlay.

I have used CA to re-apply metal inlays (I guess it is then an onlay...)

Maybe position the inlay where you want it, lay flat barstock on top of inlay, heat barstock while in place causing heat transfer to inlay while pressing down gently. There will probably be some areas that will have to be slightly reshaped on the acrylic afterwards. Just a thought.
