Merkurs

Does any one know what Merkurs are made from? I was thinking of adding another one to my collection, just not sure which one at this stage, any recommendations?

The head of the Merkur razors is Zammack (aka pot metal, aka white metal), not sure what the rest of the razor is made of.

The head of vintage Gillettes was made of solid brass, until quite late in their production run. 1970's era Techs were also made of pot metal, as it is cheaper.

On the late model Tech with the embossed caps, it was only the cap that was made of cast pot metal, the blade platform was still stamped from sheet brass.
Merkur uses Zamack because it has a low melting temperature and is easy to cast.
Merkur heads are cast. Don't know about the Vision and Futur.

Hmmm? Thanks for that bit of info, pot metal isn't very good in my experience. I may save my cash then for another Gillette to add to my growing arsenal, i had thought about buying a Merkur Futur but will probably pass. I've been getting some enjoyable shaves out of my new collection.

Not sure what their made of, but I have 4 Merkur's and I really like them. I've never had any problems with them.

My go to Merkur is the 1904, and I'd recommend it highly. :thumbup1:

Funny enough i actually used my Merkur 1904 tonight, its a nice razor, but the new Merkur blade i used tonight must have been a dud as i did'nt get a good shave at all even after 5 passes. Oh and i also noticed with the 1904 other than the handle, the head is identical to the Merkur HD (34C) which i gave to my step son as an upgrade on his Mach 3.
