Merkur Sledgehammer or Progress?

Hello gents,

I've been using a Merkur HD for the past couple of years and am looking for something that will get me a closer shave. I've read all of the reviews of the adjustable Progress and the slant Sledgehammer and am torn. I'm wondering if any of you might be able to recommend the next logical choice of razor for me.

Much appreciated!

Personally, i would go with the Progress as it is an adjustable, but the Slant could work out very well for you also. i guess i want to say, get both as you won't know which is better suited for you until you try then. Good luck.

Slant is very efficient and mild. Progress is adjustable so it can be mild at low settings but cranked up it can be very efficient as well. Either way you can't go wrong. If you shave daily I would say Progress. If you shave every few days, like I do, go Slant. Hope this helps.

+1 - This is exactly what I found to be true between the slant and a Futur. Or go all the way a get a R41. :shaving:

I haven't used the Progress since I got the slant. With the right blade, the slant is fantastic. I may still be looking for the right blade for the Progress, which could be problematic given its adjust-ability. Of course, ymmv . . . .

I'm using the slant with a feathers as a daily shaver and it is awesome. My only adjustable is a fatboy - it goes just as close if not closer at the higher settings, but its not as smooth for me.

HAHA. Just used a Futur for the first time today and love it. It's like an adjustable slant with the large blade gap.

Haven't used a Progress. I use my 39c Sledge regularly. It is very efficient but I rarely nick myself. I love it EXCEPT it barely leaves me any stubble to shave 24 hrs later!!
Cheers!

I have both, and that's the question I ask self each morning:confused1

+1...I have both as well and like both for differing reasons. My Progress (Mergress) I prefer more for daily use, the Sledge for a couple of days growth works wonders.

Ok Gents, I own all four; the SledgeHammer Slant, the Futur, the Progress, and the Muhle R41. I run the Futur wide open; my friends have described it as a straight on a stick.

In terms of efficiency, that is how quickly a razor eradicates stubble, I have to grade it this way;

1. Muhle R41 - Yes, there is a learning curve and I don't encourage against the grain until you are comfortable with it, but once you are the only comparable shaves are with a GEM MicroMatic ClogPruf.

2. The SledgeHammer Slant. Efficient, and with a much shorter learning curve than the Muhle, but the shaves may not be as long lasting or as irritation free. The last as measured by the Clubman Sting.

3. The Futur. Efficient and smooth, but it takes longer to get the same results than it would with the Slant and Muhle.

4. The Progress. Even wide open it is as efficient as the Jagger DE89. It will do a fine job removing stubble, it will give a long lasting shave, it will be irritation free, but it will take at least one pass more than the razors do to accomplish the same job.

Of course, that's my experience, and yours could very well be different.

Have both the slant and the progress (only other DE I own now is a R41) and it would be hard to choose for me. I've tried lots and lots of new and vintage DE's and these are the ones for me. Can't go wrong with either but no matter which one you choose you'll always be curious about the other one so you will end up buying both, it's just a matter of time.....

I have a 37c slant and the Progress. I do agree you probably will end up with both. I'd get the Progress first. My two favorite razors by a country mile.
