Merkur Slant Variations

The Merkur slant is made for decades now. This razor was sold with different brandings and in different variations until now.

The first too razors on the following picture look identical, exept for the plating. The left one is nickel plated and the right one is also known as Chessman slant and silver plated:

When changing the blade on these razors the main difference between both can be seen: On the left one the entire handle unscrews when changing the blade, the right one unscrews the knob at the bottom of the handle. So the head is fixed on the top of the handle while the left one is a classical 3-piece razor:

The left one on the next pic is a Chessman slant, the right one is an open-comb slant. Both have the silver plated handle. The right one unscrews the entire handle too when changing the blade:

The following one is a travel slant with the Pomco branding. These come up on the bay from time to time with the Hoffritz branding. I didn't know that they made travel slant with the Pomco branding until I got this one in the mail:

The next picture shows a Hoffritz slant. It has the fatter handle than the razors on the pics above. The next one is the current Merkur HD, this one has the fatter handle and a scalloped cap. The cap on the other razors are plain:

These are pics of a few slant variations made by Merkur and all you slant users please feel free to post pics of your slants with the different brandings and construction details to complete this threat.

Oel, a question if I may. I just "won" 2 vintage nos German slants on the Bay (make unknown, seems to be my destiny...). One with open comb, one with closed. They are both made from bakelite (probabely 1930ties). Is a slant more aggressive than a "normal" razor?

Many will say yes.....I will not....I love the vintage slant and think it's a fantastic shaver...but I don't find it aggressive at all....just a great, comfortable razor. You'll have to jest put a blade in and try it out... NOTE: Pay attention to blade alignment!! You will have to manually align the blade!!!

Thanks for the tip. Can not wait for them to come in.

I can only compare it with Gillette Adjustables (slim and fatboy) and would not say that slants are more aggressive. One member here described it like the slant gives a result like an Adjustable set to 8 or 9 but feels like an Adjustable set to 3 while shaving. I think it describes the slant very well. And I think the slant can give a great shave with 2 passes while other razors need 3 passes to give the same result.

Thanks, Oel, just what I wanted to hear :001_smile. Sounds very promising...

Make sure you avoid the 'Gillette-slide' while shaving with it, the slanted head does that for you.

I have one of the Chessman slants, and, compared to my Fatboy, Slim and Red Tip, yes, it is an aggressive razor. I have to be very very careful with it or it will rip my face to shreds. When it's being nice it does deliver a closer shave than my adjustables (even at high settings) do. I use it with a Super Iridum and that's as sharp a blade as I'll get with it. Still a great razor, but not one you'd want to start DE shaving with.

Thanks, I was gathering info (a bit late as they are on their way ). I am used to an aggressive German razor, the Enigma, probably also from that time period. I want/need an aggressive razor for my beard. I do not know where the Enigma would be on the aggression chart, but I guess somewhere near the top, it has a real nice gap, and a lot of weight...

I saw someone here mention the World Encyclopedia of Safety Razors. Think I found my new slants there: the open comb is a Golf 1; the closed comb is a Merkur 2.

Have not yet found the Enigma, btw...Also noticed my Upsal is here NN18 :001_smile The two Rotbarts I have are not in: 2000 and Sportsman.

I have them now, but they are very light, almost like a toy...Got them together with 2 old all metal open combs. I just might try those first, as they feel good in my hand. Nice and heavy.

You should try the Merkur HD or the Chessman slant. For the shave I like the HD better, but the Chessman slant is a real looker!
