What's new

Merkur should be ashamed.

My 38C was purchased about 5 years ago, and for the last two years has not seen too much use. I noticed, just a few weeks ago, that the corners of the base plate lost their plating. This really bites. How can this company have pride in such shoddy workmanship? Shame on them.

Thanks for listening.

I heard you, brother.:a17:

I read, somewhere, that few years ago Merkur had problems in their chrome plating process. Something about temperarure, I don't have more info about that.
You can try their customer service, maybe they will send you another head OR replating it (Sad to say when its about such a recent razo).

Anne Rothstein was very helpful when I had a similar problem, she sent a new head plate out to me for free just based on a couple photos I took of the problem.
Mind you, my razor was only 1 year old at that point, not 5, but there were no questions asked, it was in the mail to me the very next day.

You know, Anne just sent me a brand new blade bed for my Futur free of charge, and I had told her specifically that I was willing to pay for it since I had purchased the razor second-hand. If you send her a polite, business like email you may very well get your problem rectified.

I always send polite emails and I was invited to contact the vendor for resolution, and that when she bothered responding. My last email to them got not reply at all.
The first problem I had was plating as well, on a brand new, unused razor. I sent pictures to vendor and Merkur and ended up returning it to the vendor. I had to cover the postage for the return, plus the run around emails.
So it's the luck of the draw. It could also be the name or nationality... Who knows?

Clever. But my 50 yo razors are intact.

60 years ago, folks were spending as little as 1,75$ for a Super Speed. You can easily find one in excellent condition. SO in my humble oppinion, a 60$ razor with only 5 years under its belt shouldnt have even a scratch.

Agreed. The plating should last much longer than 5 years. My Ball End Tech has no plate loss at all.

Anne Rothstein didn't respond to my e-mail either. When I sent a letter with pictures, however, a replacement top cap was in the mail the day after she received it.

FWIW, $1.75 was a LOT of money, back in the day. But I do agree, things were made to last then.

Sorry, I have to agree. 5 years is about what I would expect a modern razor to last. If you buy modern products, you have to expect a different level of worksmanship than one made 50 years ago, unless you're willing to pay a significant premium.
