Merkur Progress

has anyone tried this shaver? It has a knob at the end of the shaver to adjust the closeness of the shave. As it looks very similar in design to the Merkur HD, I am thinking this may be even better. Thoughts?

I typically use vintage Gillette DE's and the Merkur HD, and rotate through a few, but I am always looking for something different.

i like mine and out of the Merkur adjustables it's the best, so if you want a new one that's the one to go for

but

the Gillette adjustables are a little more forgiving as the adjustments go from 1-9, the progress is 1-5 and they work on a little ratchet type mechanism so can't move mid-flight, not that the 570 will, it just feels more secure.

i ended up with both types, so why fight it :001_rolle

I got the Mergress which is a modified Progress and a 38c which is comparable to the HD, to me it seems like the head assembly angle on the Progress is just slightly different and that little bit makes a big difference imho unless opened up it is not too aggressive but a very smooth razor, to me it feels more like a Gillette top then it does comparing it to my other Merkurs

Ditto. In fact, the Progress is the only adjustable I own these days. I don't use it all that often, but it's a great shaver. If you're used to the HD, the head may take a couple of shaves to get used to, though.

Actually, the Progress does not work on a ratchet and so is infinitely adjustable. Gillette's do have a ratchet tho.

I have a Progress and a Mergress, they yield close consistent shaves, as does my Super Adjustable.

The Gillette adjustables are safer than the progress. Proceed with some caution and dial low at first.

I have the Progress and Mergress as well and really like the overall comfort of my shave when using them. In fact, the Progress has recently replaced the Futur as my daily razor.

I do use Progress from time to time when I desire a fast shave and not aiming so BBS with a mild setting. My daily shavers are 34s which I think are at the optimum in the blade gap setting.

My progress unfortunately is not totally even from left to right when opened up, so I seldom open it up to HD gap level. All in all it is a good razor. You can have a good grip as Mantic told by holding your little finger behind the knob. Same goes to my HDs and Superspeeds too. Progress handle is a slightly longer, so if you have big fingers you might like it better, though the handle is otherwise more slippery.

Do you like the mergress or the regular progress better?

Had a Mergress, sold it, just not as good as a Fat Boy & way overpriced. It was nice to look at but just didna work out for me ..

I gave a mergress to my son as his first razor, I had used it while playing in the sand box and loved it. He loves it too. I also have a progress but with a custom made knob from cooncatbob. Does that make it a bobgress?:lol::lol:
