Tatara Masamune advice sought

Nice! Enjoy the razor!

I enjoyed the one I had for the time I had it. The Masamune was enough - even though I eventually bought, and later sold, the OC Masamune and SB nodachi plate, and the nodachi cap. The Masamune by itself was the better one for me all along.

I loved the finish and the engineering of it.

Well, I pulled the trigger and a Tatara Masamune was waiting for me under the tree this morning. I've used it once and... Wow. I've no bad words to say about my previous razor, a Muhle R89, but the Masamune is a wonderful piece of kit, taking my shave to a whole new level of mildness and efficiency. One very satisfied customer here.

First off, Merry Christmas!

Glad to hear you are happy with the Masamune, It is a fantastic piece that has got praise from so many it has made a famous name for itself. Enjoy the shaves!

Congrats! I love my Masamune and once I got the angle figured out it shaves me absolutely BBS! I do like to rub my fingers on some alum for a better grip on the handle.

Congratulations on your Masamune! It is in my Top 3, probably sitting at #2 right behind my Overlander from Karve. The Masamune is awesome, in my not-so-humble opinion!!

Out of curiosity, how does the Masamune (with full masamune setup) compare to the Overlander ? Is the Masamune as efficient ?

I took a quick look at the my shaving notes from this year, looking for when I used the two razors back to back. What I didn't find were any negative comments about either, and what comments I did make were just brief "another great shave" sort of statement. So I don't know which is more efficient. I do think that the Overlander may be smidgen more comfortable for my face. And by no means am I implying that the Masamune is uncomfortable! With no recent shave to compare to, I will say that I feel like the Masamune feels more nimble and thus I can nick myself easier if I am not paying attention!

The Masamune must have an interesting geometry because it's impressive that people mention it in the same conversation as a Karve Overlander with the specs both razors have on paper. Overlander (0.73 mm gap with 0.07 mm exposure) and Masamune (0.63 mm gap and -0.13 mm exposure). Truly goes to show those specs hardly mean anything and different geometries can really affect the shave because their exposure is wildly different on paper.

Anyway thank you for answering with your experience. Sounds like they are both very comfortable and decently efficient mild razors. (I have the Overlander and love it)

Shaving notes? Amazing. I'm reminded again that some people take shaving wayyy more seriously than I do.
