trying to decide on a new razor!.....i've been using the Merkur HD 34C for quite a while, first DE razor i got. I want to stick with Merkur because the 34C hasn't let me down.

1. i want a razor with a longer handle than the 34C, i feel like a longer handle will fit and feel better in my hand.
2. i've never used an adjustable razor. it is kind of intriguing, but i feel like once i find the setting i like, i'll never adjust it, so then whats the point?
3. i have a thick, coarse, heavy beard, i mean i can prolly sharpen knives on my face after a couple days growth. for that reason im leaning toward an open comb razor. i've heard for my beard type it will give me a great shave. i know Merkur makes a couple of them but do they fit my long handle requirement?

i'm thinking this should be an easy pick because Merkur doesn't make that many razors. so what are your thoughts fellow Merkur lovers?!

what are the benefits of a slant? do i have to change my shaving technique? i could just see myself shaving trying to make it straight...

Since you are not a beginner and have been using the 34C... the only two things that you need to know are that you must respect the slant and do NOT apply any pressure. These two things help me get some incredible BBS face and dome shaves. You are gonna love the slant razors. If for some strange reason it doesn't work for you... place it on BST and it will sell within 5 minutes!!!

i've been reading a lot of reviews on various websites about the 39C. so far only read 1 negative review of it. usually when only 1 person has a bad review its more user error than hardware error.

im thinking its between the 39C and the Futur.

i like the look of the Futur and it gets just as good reviews. the downside, i've heard it could be hard to grasp, slippery when wet deal. and not sure of the length
the 39C is beefy! heavy, long, looks cool.....

!!!!!

Merkur's open-combs are all too mild unless you shim them.
i would suggest the 39C for the longer handle and the variety.
If you want something more aggressive, why don't you shim your 34C?
If you want an open-comb, try the FaTip as it is fairly priced and a very effective shaver.

celestino, more about shimming please!
A shim is a used blade with the edges cut off placed under the blade you use to elevate it slightly. Then screw the razor in as normal. I think it's unneeded but some guys do it all the time for certain razors.

Long handle OC Merkur, Jarrod over at the Superior shave has a few 12C barbers pole left. A great piece of kit, long handle, OC and a Merkur.
