What's new

Merkur Futur in need of repair.

I don't know if you can tell from the pics, but, I am missing a small wire on one side of the razor that runs parallel to the blade. I really don't know what it is for and have not tried the razor after the wire came out. I have been using a SS Red Tip and have fallen in love. Can anyone tell if this is still the contact for Merkur? Anne Rothstein at Dovo ([email protected]). This is the only address I could find.

The cap has alot to do with holding the blade. That wire is important! WOW 1rst time I've seen this. Often wondered if in time it could occur. After checking with Merkur how about letting us know the outcome and suggested fix. You may end up with a new razor

Yes It does occur and of course it occured to me. :w00t: I will post when I find out what to do. And a new razor would be nice.

I always thought this was really likely, but this is the first post I saw on this. Sorry about that - Merkur should help you right quick.

It looks like the top piece is missing.

So they don't have anything to do with the blades?

No, they don't have to do anything with the blade other than your tension on the blade will be really weak which it is a big problem. I have this same razor and as already stated the wires hold the cap down.

Well, I wouldn't attempt a shave with one of them wires missing. It might be like trying to shave with a cheese plane.

I notice that a lot of people complain that the Futur's blade vibrates a lot (I don't find this a problem myself) but with this wire missing it is going to whack your face pretty good IMHO

Have you ever heard of a broken Progress ? Me not. Futur ? Yes, this is not the first case.
That's why I refused to buy a Futur, which LOOKS like a strong mechanical device, but actually IMO has a severe design flaw: exactly the two flexible bars.
They are simply pinched at the very surface of the metallic body, yet they must bend every time you open or close the cap. IMO A cheap solution for a razor which is, otherwise, really well built.

Unbelieveable...first time i saw a wire missing  the Duoclip cap will not be holded by just one wire of course.

These "wires" are tensions springs which are only held in place by friction. Mine moved a few times and I always kept an eye on them when changing blades and specifically when cleaning with a soft brush. I think the low tension of the Futur is a large part of its character and would be utterly amazed if Merkur didnt send out spares as a matter of course.

First case of a Futur having a mechanical failure of any kind that I've ever heard of!! I've heard and read plenty of Progress problems!!
