What's new

Merkur Futur arrived broken - is there a a way to easily re-install the spring?

Today's mail brought my brand new Futur. Opened the box, popped off the top, and one of the two wire springs that holds it on fell out onto the floor.

:mad3:

Tried to pop it back into place. No dice. Tried to slide it back into place. Ditto. I don't want to return the razor if the fix is easy, but don't want to do further damage by "fixing" it incorrectly. If anybody has info on how to put the spring back in place, it would be much appreciated.

Nothing appears to be broken. But the clip that holds the spring is too tight to slide it in from the end, and if it needs to be popped in from the top it will require quite a bit of precisely-directed force. Of course, if popping it in from the top is the wrong way to go, then "quite a bit of precisely-directed force" might rapidly change the fact that "nothing appears to be broken."

I don't know anything about repair options, but I would imagine that if you bought from a reputable dealer, then you wouldn't have any difficulty securing a replacement. I'd strongly consider that option because even if you can find a simple fix, I would worry about something being damaged in the fix process. But stay tuned ... I'm sure that if there is an easy fix, someone will be along very shortly.

If your razor is broken Merkur will make it right.

I had a part on my Futur fall off. I contacted Merkur directly and they sent me the replacement parts at no charge.

This is the person I contacted.

Merkur has excellent customer service. I hope you can get your Futur fixed.

Well, I tapped the spring back into place. (Hammer, screwdriver, careful...), but popped the lid again and the spring came out with it. Looks like the problem is the retaining clip. Emailed Merkur...

If your problem is the retaining clip, as it seems to be, you can be sure that if it has happened you twice, trere'll be a third time.

I hope you are lucky with the Mercur guys, some people think their after sales service is not just brilliant:thumbdown.

Please tell us how you get on with this issue.

Here in Britain, it's the vendor's responsibility to sort these things out and I know there wouldn't be a problem with most of the vendors well known to B&B.

You certainly need to get it replaced as I couldn't imagine the damage you could do to your face if the head popped off while shaving!

In the unlikely case you can't get a solution, you may not worry. I think you colud easily solve the problem with a little bit of synthetic metal to lock the insurgent spring in it's place.

It's unfortunate that you received your razor in the condition you did. As others have said, contact the vendor first. If they are unable to resolve the situation, contacting Merkur is your next option. Since you already got the ball rolling with Merkur, wait for their response an react accordingly. Good luck to you.

Great shaver but I was never confident it would last as long as my subsequent purchases, all Gillettes. And I think my concern was that those clips would loosen eventually, and the head would move while I was shaving, which could be nasty. My advice would be get your money back or get a replacement. How relaxed are you going to be, shaving with a bodged up razor?

It's a pretty easy fix. The spring wire is held in a groove and the edges are peened over to retain the spring. I had a loose one in my Futur too. A couple taps with a pin punch and it was better than new.

+1 on contacting the vendor. The razor is brand new, and arrived defective so it shouldn't be a problem in getting it replaced. Being in the condition it arrived in, I wouldn't even bother fooling around with it. :thumbdown

Mer is correct. The wires are staked in, but that should not happen to a brand new piece of equipment...

I would demand a new one, that may or may not be much better, but I'd keep trying until I was satisfied!

I'd return it to the vendor. I know that the folks at ClassicShaving, WestCoastShaving, Barclay Crocker, Nashville knife Shop, and most of the main online shops are great about making orders right.

I have a Futur and for that kind of investment, you should expect to be able to be happy with your purchase.
