Merkur 33C razor?

I recently purchased a Gillette Tech in new condition. I have shaved with it six times. I am getting the best shaves I have experienced yet. The razor is very light and I am considering to spend $40 to put a heavy bull dog type hande on it. Is that the way to go? I was looking at a Merkur 33C at West Coast shaving. It appears to have a heavier handle for $25.50. Question: Does the 33C shave like the Tech or is it more agressive? If I get the 33C I plan to use the Gillette Tech for my travel razor. I have checked pricing on a used/new condition Tech, and they are only a little less money then the 33C.

I'd go ahead and get the Merkur. They make a quality product, and there's nothing wrong with having several razor's to use in rotation. Could be razor AD's are starting, but what the hey, if you don't like the Merkur there's always B/S/T. Really though, you have to find what works the best for you by trying different things. Good luck. :thumbup1: :001_rolle

The Merkur 33C is a fairly light razor as the handle is hollow. I think it weighs around 1.75 ounces, which is comparable to a ball-end tech. The Merkur head itself is heavier than a Tech's. The new Jagger razors are 2.3 to 2.5 ounces and probably have a better finish. Jagger D89L. The Merkur and the Jagger do shave differently than a Tech. The blade is bent more and is also more exposed.

First of all the Tech is a great razor. It is stupid easy to use and I get great shaves using a number of different blades.

As for the Merkur 33C it is a good razor however it is more aggressive and some blades work in it better than others. Also it not as maneuverable as the Tech.

If your interested in a Merkur that is similar to the Tech I would suggest the model 1904. It is easy to use and has the handling characteristics of the Tech.

Of course YMMV.

I have both a Tech and a Merkur 33c and I think the Merkur is slightly more aggressive, but not much.

here are the weights (according to my digital scale):

Merkur 33c: 1.6 oz

Gillette Fat Handle Tech: 1.6 oz

Gillette Ball-End Tech: 2 oz

I agree with other posters that the 33C is more aggressive than the Techs but it is still a mild razor. Though nothing wrong with it I do prefer the new Mühle/EJ head and the Merkur-like head on the Lord Smart and most of all the new LP1822 (not available in the US as far as I know) from Lord with the same head as that Smart has.
