What's new

Merkur 12C was rather disappointing... big time!

sigh... I shaved tonight with my brand new Merkur 12C. I put in a Feather blade expecting the best shave ever. All I got was a medicre shave. This razor is for sensitive shaves. It did not provide the close shaves that my Merkur Futur gives me... heck a Mach3 would have given me a closer shave. I'm disappointed very much. Now I know I have the best razor I will ever have in my Merkur Futur hands down! The Merkur Futur is the Ferrari of DE Razors period. I love my Futur!

The 12C is a different beast. It may not provide the same level of audible feedback as the Futur, but once you find the sweet spot, it will give you very close, comfortable shaves, similar to the Futur.

That's too bad that razor didn't work out for you. If that's the case I'd stay with the futur, and just work on your technique with that one.

I'm sure you can sell the 12C on B/S/T. :thumbup1:

+1 on that for sure!....Used the Futur for several days in a row and then switched to a VERY expensive German razor which was as heavy but NOT adjustable - its configuration made for a smooth, but not very close shave, and am stuck with it that way. The weight of the Futur plus the adjustment range make it a regular go-to from now on....

Plus it's fun reading weenie razor users whining about this great design!

Have you tried the Open Comb "Old Type" Gillettes?

Or the fabulously worked New Improved like the "New Standard", the "Bostonian" or the "Richwood"? A chew 'em off at the roots slicer like the "Tuckaway"?

How about the just down to earth, mow down the whiskers aggressiveness of the NEW?

There's a lot more razors in Heaven and Earth, Horatio....

Give 'em a shot before you wall yourself up in your Merkur cave!!!!

hehe.. my second shave was a wee better. I guess technique plays a role here. as for Razor AD... I'm in all the way. I will start ebaying soon too.:w00t:

It is all about angle with the Merkur open combs; there is only a small blade gap so when your angle is just a little bit off it won't cut it for you. I suggest you try again with very short strokes to get the sweetspot right.

Once you know it you will be able to get comfortable close shaves out of the 12C, no doubt about that.

I 'only' have the 11c, but it took me a few shaves to get it right. Once you do, it's a great shaver, thorough yet gentle. I wouldn't give up yet, and if you do: how much is postage to Germany? :wink2:

+1 on this and other posts.

I think you need more than one shave to say "this is not my razor" I remember when I was starting with open combs I shaved with my Bostonian and the Tuckaway, and obviously the results were not very good. I was used to the safety bar. However Now I have pretty much perfectioned my technique, and I get great shaves with them.

I would say: Wait for a month or so, and give it another try, maybe with a more forgiving blade, and tell us how it went.

The 12C is one of my favorite razors. Even though its mild it just takes the hairs off with no effort. Maybe partially because the size and weight of the handle. I guess to each their own.

damn damn damn... I'm eating my first post big time. third shave and it's already much much better. I can't wait for my 4th shave hihihi:biggrin1:

I agree with what was said about finding that sweet spot. I just bought a 1904 and used it 4x's and so far I got one really close shave. I know it's capable of a close shave I just have to work at it.

Take and shim that Merkur with three or four shims and tell me how close a shave you get then.:thumbup1:

I have been shaving with a slant and a Merkur with 3- 4 shims is a closer shave than the slant.

Only fault I find is that it is a pain to change blades with 3 or 4 shims in it -- but the shave is very very close and smooth

I use a shimmed Merkur 25 open comb for real close shaves
