Melting a Valobra Shaving Stick

Can a Valoba shaving stick be melted in the microwave? I'd like to transfer the stick to a Mama Bear shaving stick container?

No it can't. It contains tallow which will burn/cook before the soap melts. You can mill it with a cheese grater and press it into the container.

Thanks. That's what I thought but I was hoping I was mistaken.

--James, the lazy.

I just use a cheese grater and then smash it into my bowl. Seems to work pretty well and doesn't take that long.

An added bonus - when I then use it to grate cheese I get to taste what my soap smells like

Thanks Joe!!

I am considering putting it into a mammal bear soap stick container. That means I need to tamp it down with something, perhaps a pipe tool

My hope was that I could pour it which would have been easy. Now I'll need to work, if I do it at all :)

I've tried it both ways and actually prefer mine as a shave stick. You could always buy some AOS soap if you want it in a bowl. The AOS soap is made by Valobra and a similar formula to the stick with a better scent.

I bought a dedicated grater for shaving soap--spent less than $3 on it. It's the flat kind. Later I saw a barrel grater at Wally World for about $5.

I use a flat one that I paid a buck for at some dollar type store. Jake, use the smallest grate size there is. The resultant pile should be "billowy". Use an empty pill bottle end to do your tamping, an you can turn either a shave stick or a soap mug or bowl into a professional looking item. I grate all my hard soaps because I have personal vessels I put them into.

If you tamp them right (more like direct pressure than the tap-tap-tap method) they become 95% as solid as they were out of the factory but load your brush much easier due to the hundreds of miniscule "edges" on the soap surface.

As I wrote, I don't want it in a bowl. I want it in a shaving stick container where I can twist the bottom. I used Mama Bear's shaving stick containers as an example, but Dr. Harris has such a thing as does Gentlemen's Best, and probably several others. I want to move the stick in it's bare form to a stick container making it easier to use.

This is really easy to do- I've done it to a couple of pucks. I have the sticks from WCS (they're all the same thing I think). All you need is something kinda thin to tamp the soap slivers down. I used a pencil, but something a little bit thicker would work. The soap transfers more easily once you grate it, IMO.

I just ordered a $3 cheese grater from auction site. I figure I will use it only for soaps...that way I don't have to hide my activity from the wife-unit.

Here's an example using a barrel grater. Creating a shave stick - Remilling

I've also used a cheese grater or just cut the soap into chunks. If larger chunks get tamped down to hard, some soaps will be difficult to get out. The water from shaving smooths out any gaps or imperfections from packing the shave stick. If the soap isn't sticking together add a tiny bit of water.

The Valbora stickis pretty hard - I would probably grate with the barrel grater. And the dishwasher tells no secrets.
