MAX Makeovers: Palmera #14 and Henckels Friodur

Antique Hoosier

“Aircooled”
I have a couple I'd like for Max to do in 2010...his work is simply fantastic. Your razors look wonderful, nothing short of exactly what you'd hoped for I'm assuming.

Thanks! I'll know for sure when they arrive, but I am positive they will be exactly what I was looking for.

WOW!:w00t:

Do you have any before pics?

Not of the Friodur. It was bought from Vintage Blades summer 2008, when Jim had the worked-spine NOS blades in stock. I think I snagged the last one he had. The blade is beautiful, but the scales were absolute garbage; warped and cheap. So I had them replaced in wood. They were very well done, but I always felt it departed too much from the original look of the Friodur blades. So I asked Max to keep it as original-looking as possible.

The Palmera I got from Argentina this summer, direct from the seller (not ebay). The scales were a bit off, and the blade had a spot of corrosion on the edge and one or two minor imperfections elsewhere. I took the blade to a DMT 8C, then a Shapton 1K until I honed out the corrosion spot (which had turned into a decent chip). Then I wanted nice black horn scales for it, again as original as possible. Here is a pic of the Palmera after I had removed the corrosion chip:

What you can't see in the photo is the slight warp to the scales, some patina on the blade and the badge was lifting off the scales a tiny bit. Now it's beautiful again. Thanks to Max.

That was some impressive work you had done.

Max does great work. You can't go wrong with him.

I have a slew of Portuguese and Spanish razors that are mostly unknown to outsiders but are wonderful shavers. Palmera has gotten some more exposure recently and deservedly so.
