Matching Scheffers pen/ mechanical pencil. What's it worth?

My father had this Scheffers fountain pen, and mechanical pencil set in his box of old trinkets. Does anyone have any feeling for what it might be worth? I am looking to eventually sell it for him.

I imagine this probably dates to the 1950/1960's, as he was born in 1948.

That celluloid is very desirable. If it's in good working order, they can fetch anywhere from $80 - $175. Good luck.

Since there's no closeup of the nib, my best guess is that this is probably a 1949 Sheaffer Touchdown pen and pencil set. Great looking and performing pen. Good find! :thumbup1:

The color is called carmine red, and is less common. Any set's value will depend on condition, as is true for most antiques. A smooth nib, little or no brassing of the trim, few scratches, and a working filling mechanism will all increase its value. But its intrinsic value may be inestimable!

Have you considered restoring the set and using it? I'd recommend Aaron at pentiques.com, Ron Zorn's main street pens, and of course Richard Binder's work at richardspens.com. Aaron at pentiques has a very quick turnaround time, last I checked.

With a good overhaul, that set should run fine for another sixty years or so. Nothing like a fountain pen set with sentimental value... A pen set is an important accessory for a gentleman, and nothing says style like an heirloom set. :wink2:

Is that Carmine Red or Roseglow? (if its red-ish, its Carmine, if its Magenta-ey, its Roseglow and worth a tad more)
Looks like a Vac Fil Tuckaway set

Carmine red. I had my grandfather's WW2 set restored recently. Came out awesome. One of my prized possessions.
