Matador - Capa Roja

I received my Capa Roja last night, upon first inspection I would definitely say that it's very well made. I really like the attention to detail on this razor. The engraving on both the razor and box are a nice touch. The handle is very comfortable, and the finish is very good. Much better than Merkur.

I decided to use it this morning with a Treet Classic, which is one of my favorite blades. I would say that the performance was very good, It was a combination of efficiency, and smoothness. I love it when a razor only requires 2 passes with touch ups.

Digital scale reads;

Handle; 74.3 Grams
Head; 26.9 Grams
Total; 101.2

Very nice looking razor. The head looks very much like my Cadet OC razor and they are both made in India. Could it be they have the same heads? The handle for yours is stunning though.

Attila,

Yes it seems like they are coming from the same manufacturer. A member at the shavenook asked that question and David confirmed it.

Are they the same price?

No, the Matador line from Dave at Razor Blades & More is a few dollars more, but for that you get:

  • A more visually appealing handle
  • A choice of four colors
  • The Razor Model Laser Etched into the bottom of the handle
  • A Nice Wooden Box that has the Matador Logo and the Model of the Razor Laser Etched into it
  • Dave's A+++ Customer Service
  • Extreme Fast Shipping

I ordered mine on late Tuesday and it is tracking to be delivered tomorrow.

For those wanting the lowest price, Italian Barber would be the place to purchase the RazoRock Jaws Line.

If you are looking for a larger selection of handle styles, Shave A Buck has many new offering under the Cadet brand, although not listed on his site.

If you want the Cadet and super fast shipping, Bullgoose is second to none.

If you are looking for a variety of colors, an elegant handle design along extremely fast shipping and A++ customer service, the Matador Line from Razor Blades and More would be the place to go.

In my opinion this head is more aggressive than the FaTip and only a notch or two below the 2011 Mühle R41. The major difference is there is no worries of ripping your face off :wink2:

Of all of the open combs that I have owned or tested, this head style by far my favorite. No other OC provides such an effortless shave...and for under $30 no matter whom you purchase it from, it is a steal.

I forgot to mention that I also received a 10 pack of Personna Reds with the razor. I don't know if he's sending those will all the models, or doing different blades.

Dave is good like that, he always sends out blades with each order. He is sending out Personna Medical Preps with the Capa Azul, Perma-Sharps with the Capa Dorada, Personna Reds with the Capa Roja, and Gillette 7 O'clock Blacks with the Capa Negra. Kind of cool that he is matching razor packaging with the color of the handle.

Nice razor porn! I hope it shaves as good as it looks, 101g is heavy for a DE razor so be careful with that first shave (most DE razors are in the 50-75g range).

Very nice picture Altair! The Gold looks just as nice.

@mharris127: I have the solid bar El Matador razor. I agree the razor is heavy but the shape of the handle seems to distribute the weight very nicely. Surprisingly well balanced.

+2. I have never used a more efficient open comb. Not that I have tried the R41! I'm sure the R41 is more "efficient" but with a lot more "excitement" thrown in that I myself don't need. Some folks really dig it and I can respect that. This open comb head though is as "efficient" as I would ever need my razor to be. Again, beautiful razor.

Is the handle painted metal or wood? Wondering about durability of the finish.

The handle is solid brass. The paint looks very nice. I'm sure that if you drop it on a rough surface it will get damaged. I don't believe I've ever dropped a razor on the floor.

It looks to me like a more affordable Joris. Open comb, long handle, wood presentation box, for a LOT less coin. The presentation alone seduced me, so I got one, and one for a friend (Capa Azul and Capa Roja). I just hope I don't end up regretting the OC. I like OC heads, just not overly aggressive ones. I wish there was a way to purchase the closed comb head.

It's paint? Crap, and here I thought it was an acrylic cover over the brass or something. How long will paint last on a shaver constantly exposed to water?

Sorry I don't know if its paint or acrylic. I just said it was paint. Now that you mention the Joris, I haven't tried it. But It is a nicer FaTip

I haven't tried Joris either, but I got a FaTip back when it was still a "Muhle R89" and thought it was too aggressive so I switched out the head cap for a Merkur one and it was much better. I still haven't seen a clear enough picture of the Cadet/Matador head with the blade exposed but I'm hoping it's not too aggressive. When you shave with it, do you feel the blade?

Hey Kevan,

Paired with a smooth blade, it is a really a nice open comb. Although I love Polsilver SI's in most razors in this head they tear me up. Sharks, Astra SP's and Personna Med preps have really worked well for my face.

The finish is colored chrome over brass, it looks so much better in person than even the web. I will post pics when I get home.
