So i sprung for a bowl of Martin de Candre, very expensive. Not much lather. For a few days, I went back to some old bowls, Mandarino something, and SoCal Hipster. Much better lather, good smells. I guess it's good to rotate.

If your MdC is new, it will be fairly dry. Once you have used it awhile it should absorb some water so will be easier to load. Until then, you can try loading your brush a little longer than usual.
With a new 200g jar of MDC, what I do is to scrape a bit from the middle using a teaspoon to create a modest pocket.
This allows for a bit of room to both bloom the soap for initial uses plus makes some space to lather from the jar.

I'm completely befuddled by this. MdC is the easiest lathering soap ever made. I typically load a damp brush for 10 seconds and end up with a bowl of lather yielding 3 passes and then some. How are you lathering?
I agree with this. I used MdC this morning and I had more lather than I needed for a 6 pass shave. Be patient and you'll be rewarded with some excellent suds.
I’m with @Cino and @AlphaFrank75 in that MdC is one of the easiest lathering soaps I’ve ever used. To make it even easier, I scoop the soap into a bowl and bloom it with a tiny bit of water while I shower. Nothing lathers easier, imho.
When I first got samples of it, I had a little trouble getting the lather right scooping out of the sample jar, mostly because I don't usually load soaps that way. But loading the brush off a full sized jar always yields a ton of lather for me, the challenge is knowing when to quit.
Total agreement. I bowl lather and both MdC and Canada are by far and away the easiest soaps to lather. I swear they lather just staring at them.
I can confirm what others have already mentioned: MdC lathers like it's being paid to do so.
However, when I first tried MdC, I was mildly disappointed. Despite reading tons of reviews praising its ease of lathering, I didn't load the soap enough. I couldn't believe how little lather I got, and the shave was subpar compared to many cheaper alternatives.
Now, I rarely pick anything else but MdC. I load for 10 seconds into a bowl and continue to swirl around for another 20 seconds. Then, I have the most slick and smooth lather, which gives me an almost guaranteed great shave every time.
My advice would be to experiment with the loading times and spend some time finding the right lather consistency you like. I'm sure your experience with MdC will improve

MdC has been my go to soap for quite a few years now. I've never experienced any difficulty with a new jar of soap. I load a damp brush for 4-5 seconds, but that is a useless number unless you use my brush and my water - and my lightening speed on the puck.
I have used no soaps that load as easily as MdC. CCS and SV are close. I will say that no matter how many hundreds of times I've used it, when I first spread the soap on my face it always looks like too little soap. Then I add water and make too much lather.
I agree with the above! MdC is the best soap I’ve ever used. Lathers easily, and is a superb lather. The jar lasts ages. Stick with it.
MdC is pure soap besides whatever fragrance ingredients are in it. It takes zero effort to lather.
It's not that expensive when you consider how long it lasts and shaves per dollar. And oh man, that rich lather that whips up so easily!
Not much lather? I can literally touch my brush to a puck of mdc and it'll explode out of the jar. But no really, I can load for 10 sec and get two passes worth of shaves. Martin de candre goes very far but it must be fed water
Do you get kickbacks from each post you slobber all over Jack Black shave cream? Lol, you come into a soap thread to tout your end all be all shave cream. We get it, you found your perfect setup. Jack Black has some decent products but it’s just another heavily marketed name that’s over engineered with a ton of junk in it.
I have been using nothing but MdC for over four years (three pucks; just started my fourth). My latest is a brain bowl. A wet brush atop the puck for five seconds is plenty for more than three passes. This one is the original, very clean subtle.
Over engineering is good. Junk no. Just vastly superior to 1800’s technology.
Looking at the JB Supreme Cream, it's soap. With a couple added surfactants and stabilizers. Yes, it has a bunch of herbal oils/flower extracts, but it's hardly unique there. I'm sure it's a great product, I may have to get a tube to try it out, but pretending it's some kind of space-age innovation is just silly. The Beard Lube is different but I won't be trying that as eucalyptus is a no-go in our house.
Anyway, MdC is a nice soap. It's simple, lathers easily, and has nice fragrances.
