Making great lather with Shavemac D01

I have been using my Shavemac D01 since April and I have always had trouble getting good lather on the 2nd and 3rd pass. I have read threads about this already and adjusted my technique slight which helped but I still was getting much better 2nd and 3rd pass with my other brushes.

I have been using this technique of lather with soap for awhile and it works wonders for my lense dense badger brushes such as C&E BBB. I follow this method

I bought a boar brush recently and I get great results using a very very wet brush such as on this tutorial. I don't shake but let drip for a few seconds.

I thought today why not use a wet brush with my Shavemac D01. Not as wet as when I use my boar but much wetter than the technique above shown on the sticky. I gave it one light shake after soaking it and loaded my brush for about 1-2 minutes.

I HAD ENOUGH LATHER FOR AT LEAST 4 PASSES!

I think my problem was that with a drier brush the soap didn't work its way into the dense knot no matter how long I loaded it for.

Sorry if someon already suggested this. I read so many threads I forget what I read sometimes.

Are you face lathering or bowl lathering? If you're using a bowl, you may want to increase the amount of water you put in the bowl. Of course, now that you've found what works for you, my advice is moot.

Oh man, this advice may help me heaps! I recently switched from pure badger to a dense silvertip. I take a pretty dry brush to the soap puck and face lather. I get barely enough for my 2 pass + touch ups. Ill try more water in the brush tomorrow as I would love to have enough thick lather to last my whole shave.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I face lather.

I hope this helps you out. Let me know if it does. No matter what technique you use make sure you load the brush for a good 1-2 minutes. I have tried loading for 30 seconds and I don't get enough soap plus I have so much soap I try to use as much as I can

Tried more water today with my milled speick puck. I swirled for about 30 seconds and there was a really creamy, thick lather forming on the soap, much more than the dry brush method.

It was fantastic!...the lather lasted for my full 2 passes with heaps left over in the brush. Got a great shave with my 5 shave old feather blade.

I have about 10 triple-milled soaps in rotation and im starting to think that the dry brush method may work better with glycerin soaps given the higher water content in them. I dunno...I do know that a wetter brush works great with triple-milled soaps.

Glad I can help. I am no expert but I just post what works for me. It may work better with triple-milled soaps than with glycerin like you suggested but I was using a glycerin soap when I posted this about the D01.

With dense brushes, just remember to use more product. I had a lathering problem with my D01 and using more product solved it.

I second the "more soap" suggestion...and the "more water" suggestion. If you have enough of both the D01 will explode! I have a 23mm D01 and the thing is loaded with tons of dense lather every time I use it. Triple-milled, glycerin, creams, you name it, no problem. I think the secret is two-fold.

  1. You need more product to overcome the density of the knot. Enough soap and it gives up lather readily.
  2. But more product means you need more water than you are used to adding.

Keep that in mind and you will do just fine. Just keep practicing.
