Magnifying Instrument

What is the best thing to use for viewing the edge while I am learning to hone? Will a jeweler's loupe work? Microscope? What magnification do I need? Amazon has 30x Jeweler's Loupes for $4...

With optics you get what you pay for.

If all you want is to view the edge for chips you don't need much quality, probably the 30x will do. A lot of guys buy a magnifier that radio shack has sold. If you want to actually be able to see something then you would need a quality magnifier. About 30-40x would do but expect to pay around $100 or more for something like that.

I have this Radio Shack 30x. I have had it since before I even started shaving, but it works well for checking my bevels.

I've had one of the Radio Shack 100x microscopes for a couple of years. It's awkward to use, but for $10 it was definitely a good purchase.

I've been using a 30x jeweler's loupe since my Radio Shack 30x died. I see they now have 60-100x microscopes. I'll have to stop in for a visit. The extra magnification would be interesting.

I just bought this microscope and it was a big help to me. It takes a little adjusting to get the edge in focus but once you do you it really gives you a good picture of what is going on, on the edge. A more expensive microscope would work better and be easier to use but for $12.09 I'm pretty happy with it.

I have one too. It is super useful when I have a problem, but otherwise it just sort of sits. I wish it were nice enough to just use even when there isn't a problem too small to see.
