"Low Profile" DE Razor Good for Under Nose

Hi everyone! This is my first thread here, so hopefully it won't come off as too noobish.

I have an Edwin Jagger DE89 safety razor and while I love it, I always have problems getting the area just under my nose when shaving. I used to use a Gillette Fusion cartridge razor and never had this problem due to the smaller profile trimming element on it. I don't really want to buy a specific separate razor like the Merkur Mustache Razor. What I'd really like is if there was a razor that had a lower profile head or something that would be easier to get just under my nose. I can get under my nose with the Edwin Jagger I have now, but it requires a lot more work than using my Gillete Fusion.

I noticed this new Tradere razor being talked about, and it seems to have a lower profile head. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it and could testify if it really is lower profile around the head or if it's just the picture. To compare:

Or if any of you guys have a similar problem and have gotten around it somehow, that'd be good to know. Thanks everyone!

There shouldn't be a problem with DE89. Just flip it and it's perfect for shaving under your nose. Actually, it's more convenient than the Tradere in this respect.

gday and welcome to B&B and wetshaving.

there are no judgements made about noobishness here at B&B so have no fear!

what about a slim or a progress? do you use your off hand to push your nose to a better position? just tilting your head back and shaving may not be the best. give the nose push/twist a try. also, you may want to hold the hand a bit further out from your face and not have it parallel, this will give you a bit more room to work.

cheers mate - dont' forget to head over to the Hall Of Fame and tell us a bit about yourself.

The lowest profile razor head that Iv'e used is the Goodfella open comb.
I only had it for a couple of weeks then sold it on. It was way too mild for me. It looks nice though!

Thanks for the replies. I should probably mention to that technically speaking, I can get pretty much everything with the DE89, but I'd really prefer not to have to push my nose and stuff. Like I said, I didn't need to do this with my Gillette Fusion, and it really pains me to give the Fusion an edge in any regards over my safety razor that I love, but for at least the shape of my face, it just is definitely better. So I was really hoping to get another razor. For some reason, this is an extra step in shaving that really is hard to get over the annoyance of.

I find flipping the DE89 doesn't really do the job either. It will get most of it without any special pushing of my nose, but like I said, I was at least hoping it would compare with the Fusion.

As for the slim: I personally don't want to buy a vintage razor. I actually did buy a vintage Gillette adjustable as my first DE razor a while back and it not only grossed me out, but I didn't like the shave as much as my Edwin Jagger and actually switched to using a badger brush and real lather with a Gillette Fusion. As for the progress: it just doesn't strike me as looking any lower profile in the head of the razor than the one I'm using. If you had personal experience comparing the two, I might be a little more receptive, though.

I know that this is a single edge razor and vintage, but try a schick as they are very low profile and work great under the nose.

Just my 2p

Good morning, I have found an old Schick injector razor to be the real deal to get the upper lip and under the nose. They're not to hard to find if you poke around at a few antique stores, and the blades are still available. One blade lasts a long time if all you use it for is under your nose!

I did the same when i started DE shaving, I also used the trimmer bit on the cartridge for under my nose.

After figuring out what I was doing, I don't have any need for that anymore, any of my DE's are fine.

For downward strokes, push nose up and to the side.

For across the grain the head size doesn't cause any problems.

If any whiskers are left I then do a few very short strokes at about 45 degrees.

Hopefully that will help you, your current razor should do the above fine.

I shave with the E.J. DE 89 L every day and I have never had a problem shaving under the nose. First pass downwards, second pass side ways. Sideways it gives me a very good / clean and precision shave / pass. Why you don't try it?

Welcome to B+B. No such thing as too simple a question.

I don't want to sound negative, but the fact is that nothing, no razor no matter what design, no matter how low profile will fit under most noses. You will still have to manuver the razor. You'll have to shave ATG and possibly XTG and there's no way around that.

You can try a Tradere. I have one it's great. You can try a a vintage superspeed (after 1958). I have a number, they're great. You can sterilize vintage razors and they'll be cleaner then when they came out of the factory. You can turn this into a quest and at the end of the day, you'll still have to manuver the razor under the nose.

I keep an O1 travel Tech for this very use. It's got an IP Red mounted and is perfect for trimming. I've tried the 'reverse' approach with my HD and Progress but too often get a nick for my efforts. N/S seems to be the only way this face likes.

The cobra from classic shaving has a very low profile. Despite the wider blade it is very easy to get under the nose for me.

You could also always grow a stache or a goatee.

I know I will be jumped on for this answer. It's against the premise of this forum, but...
I too use a DE89 (among others), and I found that the razor on the back of the fusion cart (I don't know what it is offically called) is still the fastest, easiest way for me to trim between nose and mustache.
It's the only thing I use the fusion for and the carts last a very long time since the usage is minimal.

Welcome to B&B )

Try shaving sideways under the nose, from left to right and right to left, if I want a good BBS under the nose I would just flip the razor around upside down and go against the grain lightly, EJ has a very low profile head, and it's a very smooth efficient razor. It doesn't get any better with low profile head when it comes to a modern DE Solid Bar Razor like the EJ89 )

Hope that helps.

There is not much (and cannot be much) variability in the profile of DE razors due to the standard size of double-edge blades. The experience will never equal that of a cartridge in terms of the north-south shave right under the nostrils. The little bit of stubble that is left there after the downward pass is easily taken care of with XTG and ATG. I had finally gotten used to this, and then I tried to shave with a Damaskeene! Talk about high profile!
