I'm a big fan of BOTS Eton College aftershave, but it's alcohol-based. Any thoughts about a non-scented balm or something to use beforehand?

Nivea makes an unscented balm I believe? Even the scented one is very mild and fades after a half hour.
Even just a basic moisturizer would help and you could still enjoy the AS with it.

Splash on some Lucky Tiger before your a/s.
CeraVe lotion (or cream if you don't mind a dab and very (yes, "very") small drop of water to help it flow and spread).

Great suggestions above! You could also consider adding a bit of glycerine to your AS.

I mix my scented aftershaves and colognes with Nivea Men balms. Put a blob of Nivea in your hand and add a few drops of AS or cologne, blend and apply. Also helps the staying power of the chosen scent. When I've got it massaged into my face and there's almost none left on my hands I run them through my hair. That also helps retain the scent longevity.
