What's new

Love for my new Futur

Well, I'd gotten onto DEs to save money....which of course leads to spending wads of money on shaving kit. I've had a weishi and an Edwin Jagger DE89. I struggled a bit with the weishi (so mild I couldn't get a proper shave) but loved the DE89. In fact, I loved it so much I reckoned I'd stick with it for the long haul.

That's when I got interested in straights and bought myself one for my birthday. After a number of so-so shaves (which were VERY stressful) and a wound that's become a scar I decided maybe safetly razors were enough. It's nice to be able to shave with a hangover. So I decided to make up the birthday gift to myself by getting an adjustable. I found the futur on the classifieds here, bought it, and waited eagerly for its arrival.

I had read a bunch of reviews and wasn't sure what to expect. I went through my normal prep routine and loaded an Astra Platinum into the futur. The result? Amazing! The Futur gives that "blade right on my face" feel I got from the straight, but is perfectly balanced and very controllable. I went 3-2-1 over three passes for the first shave and the shave was so close it felt completely different from any I'd had previously. I've slowly been ratcheting up the settings 4.5-2.5-1 seems to be about as aggresive as you could want for the first pass, but nicely mild on the lowest setting for the last pass.

Finally I tried it with my last feather, a little cautious as I've had mixed results with the feathers in the past. The result? Fantastic, I feel like the feather is made for this razor. You can sense the seriousness of the shave you're getting, go slowly and gently. It's an amazingly smooth and efficient shave. I'm hooked and now there's 100 feathers flying in from Singapore with my name on 'em.

I think I've found my razor, this time for sure...no need for anything else....unless someone want to trade something fun for a dovo special straight in tortoiseshell....then maybe a new brush....

I'm not saving and money at all......

Glad to hear the Futur is working out for you! It is funny that most of us got into DE shaving to save money but that doesn't really happen for a lot of us I'm sure. Though you can't say we aren't having fun with something that was pure drudgery before. So I guess there is a bit of a tradeoff there. I could see myself settling down with the equipment once I've nailed down what I like and then experimenting with different soaps and aftershaves when stock needs to be replenished. Uh, yeah I still won't be saving any money will I? :biggrin1:

One of the many positive attributes of the Futur is that it make almost any blade perform well.
Be careful and get the sound and feel of the angle right and you will get a lifetime of satisfying shaves from it.
Best,
Mike

Funny when I think back. When I had a mach3 (or whatever it was) I used about 5 blades a year because they were so expensive. Now my blades are miles better and I use them 3 or 4 times. Still, morning is so much better.
