Looking to move and work in Oz

I'm considering a move to Australia some time soon and hoping to find work as a chef there, before I go. Can any of you guys recommend a website to find work. I'm in the UK now. I will also need to find somewhere to live if you know the best way to organize that online.
I would appreciate any other helpful info you might have regarding visa's etc.

You're 150 years too late...back then all you would have needed to do is steal some butter and you would have received permanent lifelong employment Down Under, including relocation...

Like with anything, the ease of it may depend on your experience. I had a mate who used to be a chef at the Savoy in London. When he emigrated a fancy local hotel wanted him so badly they put him up in the hotel until he found his own place to live. Not bad.

Don't forget the Visa...

You will need to choose between a few visa. The usual is 'skilled' visa, that one is good for 5 years - unlimited work. There's a waiting time but I don't know how long it is in the UK. The other is the 'business' visa (I think), that one is good for 6 months only and work unlimited.

You will need to have a few medical exams and everything should be good.

One question that you should ask is if you will be able to get your 'permission to work' stamp in your passport right away or there will be a waiting period. I had to wait 4 months for mine and it took them less than 3 minutes to give it to me...

Thanks for the info Luc.
Do you mean you were in Australia 4 months before you were able to work?

Correct.

It took around 6 months to get the visa, I moved to Australia and it then took 4 months to get my permission to work, ATO number (Australian taxation office), etc.

Thats a long time to go without working! I couldn't risk that, so I'd need to try and sort it out in advance. Didn't think it would take 6 months for the visa, guess I'd better start applying right away.

It depends on which visa you are applying on. A skilled visa takes a bit of time (at least in Canada) to be authorized. Your permission to work will be given by the immigration office in Oz. I'm currently on a student visa with SWMBO and was told that I would wait a month before I could get the permission to work.

It took a bit longer, I do think it has something to do with the type of visa. A skilled visa will be processed first. The Business visa takes 10 days to authorize but is only good for 6 months... I would think they would give you a permission to work right away with those.

In any case, good luck!
