Looking to expand

I have recently started using a fountain pen (pilot metropolitan), and am ready to start getting another pen to use as well. I'm looking for something a little different this time (maybe vintage), but unfortunately, I don't really know enough about them to be a discerning buyer. I only have a $30 for this pen. There is nothing wrong with my metro, but I just want to expand my experience a little, and start to figure out what I like and what I don't, as well as be able to try different ink more quickly. I'd like recommendations on something different to try.

Am I OK going with an ebay pen that is supposed to work fine, or would an ad on the BST be safer for me at this point?

Esterbrook is a good starting point for the vintage experience I feel you are looking for: easy to fix, available spare parts, and right around your pricepoint. The SJ model is kinda small, you'll probably want to look for a J model.

A WTB on the B/S/T wouldn't hurt. eBay would be more hit-or-miss.

I'll try the BST later. I haven't seen any esterbrooks yet, but will keep an eye out for one.

How about the noodler pens? Are they different enough from the metro to give some perspective?

That's all I need to hear about that.... I'll stick with BST. And I've already posted to see what turns up.

Best of luck. The Esterbrooks are nice pens but would agree with Doug that a J is better than an SJ size-wise. A Parker 21 is a nice pen as well.

So look for parker 21 or esterbrook J size. Anything else that would be worth keeping an eye on?

I have a wearever that was my first tinker was an easy fix and easy find for a new sac... had on the cheap too but I think the esterbrook would be a nicer pen
