Looking for travel razor

I'm interested in buying one of those DE travel razors that break down into 2 or 3 pieces. Can anyone suggest a reliable vendor with good prices?

You can also find a Travel Tech pretty cheaply on the 'bay. They have short handles and aren't going to be your most aggressive blade, but they are vintage and kinda cool.

there are lots of cool options like a vintage tuckaway or merk travel razor...but honestly, a basic garden-variety ball-end tech is hard to beat.

it has a full-sized handle, takes up very little space and is affordable...

+1 on the ball end tech.

don't get hung up on finding a razor that is labeled as a "travel razor." These generally have very short handles and are clumsy and awkward to shave with.

And the tiny size doesn't really save you much when compared to a full-sized razor. Unless you're going up in the Space Shuttle, size and weight aren't that critical.

Better to get yourself a full-sized razor that will give you a good shave ... whatever you're shaving with at home right now will do just fine. You might want to buy a duplicate just for travel, though, in case you run into over-zealous TSA screeners that like to confiscate anything that looks like its a borderline security risk.

You could even get by with a disposable cartridge razor, like a BIC or Sensor or Atra. Even though you thought you turned your back on cartridge razors when you took up wet-shaving, they still come in handy for travel, they're readily available, and dirt cheap.

The Feather Portable is a fine, very affordable travel razor. It's slightly more aggressive than the Tech, which also a fine choice. Between the two, I like the Feather.

Pauldog used to sell them here, but doesn't any longer. I don't know who sells them these days, but well worth seeking out.

K.T.

I was gonna suggest Pauldog. Bought a feather portable from him for my first DE, and he was very helpful. Didn't realize he had stopped selling. Unfortunate for the OP's sake, but you should still be able to track down an affordable feather portable. Otherwise, I do agree that getting a "travel" razor might not be the most vital thing in the world. I mean personally merkurs are a little expensive to get one JUST for travel. A vintage tech or a lord knockoff should work.

On short trips where I do not check in any luggage, I take my wilko classic which I got for 4 € together with 5 reasonably good blades. The european flight control officers can be a bit cramky with stuff that they do not see so often so if they decide to confiscate it, it is not a big loss.

Can't remember, but I think someone took over from Pauldog on the Portables. Might be worth a search. Great razor and that Japanese attention to detail re: the travel case (hyper-efficient packaging) makes it an intangibly better value for your eight bucks.

I travel with one of my nicer razors - a rhodium #66. Sort of brightens up many dreary jet-lagged mornings in faraway hotels. So I'm wondering: has anyone ever had an empty safety razor confiscated at the airport? Or is this a B&B urban legend, which I rather suspect it is.

yuppiejr is pinch-hitting for Pauldog.

I bought a carton of Feathers from him. He emailed back that he had them in the mail less than 20 minutes after I sent him PayPal, and they were received at this end in about a day and a half. Excellent service. Excellent prices.

I've not had a razor confiscated, but I did leave it loaded once on a return home and had to be lectured as they made me remove the blade.

Once; shame on you, twice; shame on me, three times will never happen :tongue_sm

I have the Merkur travel razor in the leather pouch. I only pack it in my backpack and only use it camping. For regular travel I use one of my adjustables.

I never got the whole 'travel razor/travel brush' concept. Unless you're backpacking in Alps, is that extra gram of weight going to make that big a difference to your pack?

For me, the Tech works great for travel because breaks down and fits nicely into a travel case. I also have a smaller brush for travel.

BUT, the bigger reason to keep a travel set is that it has pieces I wouldn't cry about if it was lost or left somewhere. It's more about protecting my good pieces by leaving them at home than the weight or size.
