Looking for my first adjustable

The title of the thread pretty much says it all. I am currently using a Murkur HD and an EJ DE89L. I have been wet shaving for a little over 3 months now and really enjoy it. As far as your suggestion goes, the razor does not have to be new. Thanks in advance. :biggrin1:

depending on price range...
ive used a slim, progress and a futur

i dont like the futur at all. the blade changing seems very clumsy and very very big.

slim or progress is my vote

slim for the price.

I have a Merkur Progress, Fat Boy, Slim, and Super Adjustable....and a PAL adjustable Injector but thats another story. You cant go wrong with any of the Gillettes.

The Slim is very nice, small head easy to maneuver and easy to find. The Super Adjustable is very similar but with a longer handle. The fat boy has a nice fat handle that is easy to grip, but it is by far the shortest so that looses points for me since I have big hands. The Fat Boy also has the biggest head of any of the Gillette adjustables. While its not hudge it is noticeably harder to get under my nose and around some other narrow spots.

As for the Progress, its a fine razor, but it lacks the knurling on the handle to grip it properly, and the head is as big if not bigger than the Fatboy. Plus the regular length handle is very short, again not winning any brownie points from me. That said its a nice heavy razor that does a good job if you can keep your hands on it.

I have a Super Adjustable and it is one of my best performers. Out of my current mix it is diffidently in my top 2. I would recommend it to anyone, but I will admit it is the only adjustable I have used so take my opinion with that in mind.

I have a fat boy, slim, super adjustable, toggle, Mergress and Eclipse that are adjustable. Personally I would get them all.

But to start with a long handled super adjustable can still be bought in America very cheaply, it would be a shame not to take the opportunity as this is an excellent shaving device. It is as smooth as a heavier razor and as wieldy as a lighter razor. To actually use it is my favourite Gillette (at the moment!).

But if you want a fantastic modern razor that really delivers then the Mergress is the way to go. Put yourself on the waiting list at Lee's.

I have a slim adjustable, FB, and Mergress. If you had asked me a month ago I would have said my Progress (now Mergress) was number 3, with the FB and slim tied for first place.

Now with the conversion of the Progress into a Mergress, it is by far my favorite razor. I have gotten used to the grip of it (the surface may be slippery at first) and the shaves are wonderful.

If you like a head heavy razor, go with the fatboy.. If you prefer a lighter and smaller razor look at the slim...

I enjoy both of them!

Unless you've got something against vintage Gillettes, why don't you just get a Slim? They're plentiful, cheap, and quality razors.

I've go nothing against vintage. In fact I really enjoy vintage things. I love old or handmade things, as they say they don't make them like that any more. I have purchased a slim from one of our members who gave me a really good deal.

I have a Futur, Slim, and FatBoy. They are listed in the order they provide me with great shaves.

I should also mention that I use them wide open; that is the Futur at 6.5, the Slim & FatBoy at 9.

+1. I've been using my "new" SA this week with an Astra SP blade at setting 6 and it gives me a close, smooth and irritation-free shave.

I think there's quite a lot variation in the price they're selling for. I'm not sure, but I think they are particularly highly regarded here in Europe (?) because they usually seem to sell for a lot of cash even without the case. I paid $34 + shipping for mine uncased. I partly paid that much because it was my birthyear razor in good condition.
