Looking for a stand

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but seems closer than the others. for I'm getting a shaving rig for christmas and I am looking for a stand for a brush, razor (Merkur 38c), and a brush. MY wife stipulates that it have a bowl for the brush to hang over, as she doesn't trust me not to drip (although presumably the brush shouldn't be drippy). I can't find much that fits the bill. Everything is either part of a set, really expensive, or out of stock. Open to suggestions, would like to keep it under 60 bucks or so.

Thanks

Thanks. That was kind of my thought about the dripping, but I haven't actually shaved yet, and I make a fantastic mess with most of what I do.

If you don't mind acrylic you could try www.cuttingedgerazors.com, which is run by a B&B member, and he also does custom stands.
As etoknife said you shouldn't have any problems with the brush dripping, but if it's just to keep your wife happy, a relatively inexpensive bowl can be found online without too much trouble (here, here or here for example). Total cost will definitely be sub-$60.

So not quite sure how much you want to spend. Others have posted stands on the upward of $60. I'll tell you what I did, not sure how kosher this is but it works. I went to Bed Bath and bought a toothbrush stand that would be able to hold the razor. And it looks nice and I spent under $10.

Gentlemen, Can I ask a really stupid question; Is it really necessary to have a brush stand??? What is the best way to store the brush? I have been shaving for a lot of years, but just recently bought my first couple of nice brushes. I am very curious as to full care to keep them nice?

It's not a stupid question. Many people think they need a stand, but in fact they are not at all necessary.
If you think it looks nice, by all means get one. But your brush will dry perfectly fine without one.

You can either stand it on its base or hang it in a stand. But make sure to give your brush a few good shakes and to store it in a well-ventilated area (e.g. not in a cabinet or closet).

I always follow Mantic's method for shaving brush care:

And finally, here's an exiperiment one member did showing that it makes no difference whether the brush stands or hangs:

I did one dense brush (Rooney 3/1 Super) and one not-so-dense softer brush (Superior Super 20mm). Standing up on the handle yielded slightly better drying, but I'm not sure the difference is statistically relevant. Conclusion: it probably doesn't matter, so: 1) don't add it to your "must have" list because you need it, but only if you want it; 2) if you have a gorgeous gold-plated brush stand or one to match your velvet Elvis painting, no harm to your brushes. 3) if you want to get rid of that butt-ugly one your mother-in-law gave you, ignore statistical relevance and claim scientific proof to your wife as justification.

I've seen this experiment. However.. where do you want the water drying? Running down into the knot, or out towards the tips of hair? I know what I want.

Irregardless, this experiment doesn't show anything else than that the water disappears no matter how you position it, and nothing else.

(But good God, where else in the world would you find people figuring out stuff like this on their spare time?)

You might want to try Gents, who sell a custom made stand for the Merkus razors for 19 EURO, which is about 30 dollars.

I bought one for my Merkur Vision and then yet another for my brush, since it is good looking, steady and clean.

Available here: http://www.gents.com/products/gents-shaving-brush-razor-stand

Good luck to you!

The remaining moisture will not "drip" anywhere. There should not be any standing water left if you give it a good shake after use.

Hah. I hear that, but in practice that's not always how it ends up. Boar brushes are a stellar example of that. I have to shake my Proraso until my arm is tired unless I want it it take ages drying (days). And a "good shake" is a very unscientific term. I shake my fine badger brush like five, six or maybe even seven to eight times and don't trust any other way than mine. See where I'm going?

Gravity is gonna make that water run down in the long run whether you like it or not. However, if a brush is super dense, it might not have any room anyway, and that's might be why really big and expensive (lot of hair expensive) can last decades without shedding.

So many variables though, that a stand is just staying on the safe side. Especially if you don't have a gazillion brushes, unlike some people around here
