What's new

Looking for a new Brush

I'm looking for a new Brush. I am kinda new so I am not sure what brand to get. I don't want to spend too much and I want something better than a pure badger.

To help in giving you advice, please give us some more information regarding your shaving routine.

Do you face lather, palm lather, bowl lather....?

and

do you use cream, soap, canned foam....?

What soap do you prefer?

Hi Captain.

I have tried, palm, bowl and directly on face.

Direcltly on face is my method of choice.

I use both cream and hard milled soap.

My routine is basically,

1. Take a hot shower
2. Wet Brush, and put soap on it.
3. Create lather on face
4. Single pass with grain
5. Cold shower.

That is quite a bit of information, thanks. When you say "I don't want to spend too much" what do you actually consider to be your budget for a new brush? There are plenty that will fit your requirements but if you can narrow things down somewhat.......

Not to get off OP's topic but Cold Shower? :confused1 Are you shaving your whole body or just your face? Wouldn't a quick splash of some cold water on your face be much more efficient?

I would allow brush to soak handle down in very warm water while showering. Unless it has a wooden handle. Then handle up with water level 1/4" below knot ring.

If you are starting to acquire brushes on the cheap then do not dismiss the Semogue boar brushes. They are great face latherers. I have a 1460 that is breaking in nicely and am about to use my new 620 in a few minutes. After hearing descriptions of how scrubby it is I am pleasantly surprised at how supple the bristles feel out of the box. Good luck... Vintage Scent Co. stocks a variety.

You might want to try a combination boar/horse hair brush made by Vie-Long. They are made in Spain and the reviews say they work well with soaps or creams. I believe Phil at Bullgoose sells them. And I think they are priced under $30.

+1 on the Semogue boars. I use an SOC, 1305 and 620 and all are great.

For the money you can't go wrong with an Omega boar. Another VERY good performer for the money is a Crabtree & Evelyn Best Badger Brush, but for a just a bit more you can have a custom Rudy Vey at around $80 to $90 US. This one would be in Finest, or silvertip, which would work for soaps and creams, face or bowl lathering.

Shavemac also has some very good brushes, but fare a bit higher due to the name.

If I were you I would buy the best brush I can afford as a well made brush will last 20 years, and will help you get the best shaves possible...

As with most things your mileage may vary (YMMV) so good luck!
