I don't think that you can go wrong with any soap from Mike's natural shave soaps. Pick up a few samples for about $1 per. Many of us here can vouch that Mike's soap is top notch. Their Barbershop scent shouldn't be missed.

Proraso, D.R. Harris and Mitchell's Wool Fat are a few of my favourite soaps. For brushes, I would suggest an Omega boar or a Simpson's badger.

It seems like pretty much everyone ends up with Proraso and Tabac sooner or later. Might as well get them now. One is an excellent vegie soap (Proraso) and the other an excellent tallow soap (Tabac). If you want to try a great french shea butter soap, try Provence Sante Green Tea.

I do not know what country you live in, but in the USA you can buy Williams or Van Der Hagen for a buck or two to get started. Williams is one of my favourites among the dozen or so soaps that I own.

+1 Mitchell's Wool Fat can be a bit challenging to lather..... but when you get it.... it's the best. I'd substitute Semogue for Omega when it comes to boars (I've never tried Omega brushes though :001_unsur .... I'm sure they are just fine if Dennard says so ).

OK the big questions:

Where do you have gift cards from?

Where are you located?

Your profile does not say where you are located. You might want to update this so that you can receive better (more location centered) help from other members.

To update your location profile:

1) Click Settings at the top of the page
2) On the left sidebar under My Settings click Edit Profile
3) Scroll down and enter a general location (how specific you want to get is up to you)

Go to your local walmart and get the VDH (Van Der Hagen) shaving set. The delux set comes with soap, bowl and brush for less than $10.00, and the luxury set, if the have it, goes for around $20 and comes with an upgraded brush, brush stand, bowl and luxury soap. Either will get you started in the right direction, and when your AD (Acquisition Disorder) kicks in, you will not have already heavily invested in items you will not use.

Thanks, Ben. I have yet to try a Semogue, but I know they are fine brushes. I have my eye on an SOC for a future purchase.
