longevity of blade

As some of you know, i'm using the feather straight razor. By all means it's sharp. But what strikes me most is the large variance in longevity. Sometimes i have a blade that will hold out for 20 or more shaves... now i have a blade that only lasted 2 shaves (and a third one i forced out of it but didn't really go that well). Seriously, what gives? am i doing something wrong? I'm already drying my blades to not led them get corroded but it just isn't that consistent as i expected.

The angle is the main thing. A steep angle will dull a straight blade really fast.
You just can't get that steep an angle on a safety razor.

I'm kind of surprised at the 20 shaves from a disposable blade. But blade stocks can vary, even within the same pack of blades. I get from one to many shaves from a blade before they go bad.

vary yes... but difference between 2 and 20 shaves is a bit weird... it was the last blade in that pack... perhaps it's some kind of warning blade... "This is your last blade... buy more because this one shaves like crap"

I never got a blade that lasted that long. Are you hand stropping?

My average is between 3 and 5. As soon as it pulls, I change it. Like Jon, I had blades that were good for 1 shave only...

Blades are pretty much a precision instrument, and like all instruments that require as much precision as we expect from, not all pass the muster. I normally get 3 great shaves. I never chance it any more than that. If the blade I pull out doesn't feel like it's up to the task I toss it, shine up my lather a bit more, and put another blade in the chamber. A dud blade every once in a while is a small price to pay for smooth skin and an unhealthy obsession.

i see the post has moved... why it has been moved to the "safety razor" section is a big questionmark for me as the razor is everything but safe. (it's not a de blade!)

anyway, i just popped in a new blade... it was heaven to get a nice shave again!

A mate from work told me he gets 2-3 MONTHS from a disposable. I think he was jealous my blades cost around 30 cents...

I'm getting 4-5 shaves before I toss the blade. Feathers seem to get smoother towards the end while Derby Greens seem to stay constant then just get dull.

I have had some Feathers last two shaves, while others have lasted 8. Go figure.

Are you using an Artist Club? How do you dry your blades?

Dont know if all of you out there will actually believe me..........but this the truth and nothing but the truth.

I get anywhere from 20 to 25 shaves per blade with an English Gillette or even a Wilkinson Sword consistently.Everytime.And I am not fibbing.

Now will someone Donate a Fat Boy to me.I am desperately need to use one and cannot buy one....I am a pensioner.

Stubblefree....way to go
